ALL THE LEARNING STARTS HERE, WHERE INSTRUCTORS WORK WITH SMALL GROUPS, NO MORE THAN 20 STUDENTS, TEACHING MACHINING PROCEDURES AND USING THE LATEST EQUIPMENT. IT'S ALL ABOUT HOW TO SETUP AND RUN BORING BARS, HOW TO CLEARANCE CYLINDERS, RESIZE CONNECTING RODS, ALIGN HONE BLOCKS, AND MACHINE AND REBUILD CYLINDER HEADS. AND PERFORMANCE ENGINES INCLUDE HOW TO BALANCE ROTATING ASSEMBLIES, CC COMBUSTION CHAMBERS, DEGREE CAM SHAFTS, AND FINAL ENGINE ASSEMBLY. STUDENTS THEN TUNE THOSE ENGINES IN THE

CAMPUS DYNO COMPLEX. A FIRST CLASS FACILITY THAT HAS HOSTED THE PRESTIGIOUS ENGINE MASTERS CHALLENGE FOR THE PAST NINE YEARS. ANOTHER REALLY COOL SHOP IS THE 8,000 SQUARE FOOT ROBOTICS AND AUTOMATION CENTER. HERE FUTURE TECHNICIANS LEARN HOW TO CUSTOMIZE, MAINTAIN, AND REPAIR ROBOTS, PREPARING THEMSELVES TO PROVIDE EXPERT

SERVICE THROUGHOUT THE LIFT OF A ROBOT, INCREASING ITS EFFICIENCY AND PROLONGING ITS USE IN THE AUTOMATED WORK PLACE. IN FACT, NOW UNOH EVEN OFFERS AN ASSOCIATES DEGREE IN ROBOTICS.

IT NOW PACKS 427 CUBIC INCHES AND HAD PORT WORK DONE TO THE STOCK HEADS AND SUPERCHARGER AT SAM TECH. IT IS A PUMP GAS ENGINE AND MAKES 15 POUNDS OF BOOST. IT CRANKED OUT 816 HORSEPOWER, AND 797 POUND FEET OF TORQUE ON A CONSERVATIVE TUNE.

(PAT)>> THEN WE DROPPED IT IN THE CAR, HOOKED UP A SIX SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, DID SOME SUSPENSION UPGRADES, AND INSTALLED A UNIQUE WHEEL AND TIRE CHOICE. FINALLY WE FIRED IT UP AND HEARD THE NOISE WE ALL LIKE TO HEAR.

WITH EVERYTHING OUT OF THE WAY WE CAN REMOVE THE BRACKET FROM THE HOUSING FLANGE. NOW SIMPLY REPOSITION THE FASTENERS IN THE OTHER SET OF HOLES. NOTICE HOW MUCH LOWER THE CALIPER MOUNTING TABS ARE NOW. NOW JUST PUT EVERYTHING BACK IN THE ORDER IT WAS REMOVED. INSTALL THE ROTOR...

...AND FINALLY THE CALIPER IN ITS NEW PLACE.

(PAT)>> WITH THE SPRINGS BACK IN, WE'LL USE SCREW JACKS TO RAISE THE REAR END TO RIDE HEIGHT SO WE CAN SET THE PINION ANGLE. PINION ANGLE IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ANGLE OF THE YOKE COMING OUT OF THE REAR END VERSUS THE DRIVESHAFT GOING TO THE TRANSMISSION. SO WHY IS PINION ANGLE IMPORTANT? WELL IF YOU HAVE DIFFERENT POWER LEVELS THEY REQUIRE DIFFERENT AMOUNTS OF PINION ANGLE. THE LESS POWER THE ENGINE MAKES THE LESS IT TRIES TO ROTATE THIS DRIVELINE UP TOWARDS THE CENTER OF THE CAR. SO CARS LIKE THIS CAPRICE THAT HAVE 797 POUND FEET OF TORQUE REQUIRE MORE PINION ANGLE. SO WE'RE GONNA SET IT ACCORDINGLY. FIRST WE'LL MEASURE THE ANGLE OF THE YOKE, AND IT LOOKS LIKE

IT'S AROUND ZERO. SO WE'LL GO OVER HERE TO THE SHAFT, AND ONCE IT STABILIZES

IT LOOKS LIKE IT'S AROUND THREE DEGREES.

SO THAT MEANS WE HAVE THREE DEGREES OF DOWN ANGLE. NOW WE WANT TO INCREASE THAT TO AROUND FIVE OR SIX. SO WE HAVE TO DO SOME WORK ON THE UPPER AARMS. ADJUSTABLE UPPER CONTROL ARMS MAKE IT EASY FOR US TO ADJUST THE ANGLE. SIMPLY TURN THE ADJUSTOR IN EVEN INCREMENTS SO THE PINION

MOVES TOWARDS THE GROUND. THEN WE WILL CHECK THE ANGLE WITH THE ANGLE FINDER AGAIN. DO THIS UNTIL THE TARGETED ANGLE IS REACHED. ADDING THE TWO OPPOSING ANGLES TOGETHER READS FIVE AND A HALF DEGREES, AND THAT PUTS A FINAL TOUCH ON OUR DRIVELINE. WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK.

(MIKE)>> WE'RE BACK AND ONE MORE SMALL THING NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. IT'S SIMPLE AND JUST EXTRA INSURANCE WE DON'T RUN INTO ANY FUTURE PROBLEMS. WHEN A LOT OF YOU GET YOUR NEW FACTORY MUSCLE CAR, THE FIRST

THEY DO NOT HOOK UP WELL AT THE DRAG STRIP, AND THEY DON'T LIKE DOING BURNOUTS EITHER. THAT TYPE OF HEAT MAKES THEM A LITTLE SLICK AND GREASY, WHICH CAN ONLY LEAD TO TWO THINGS, AT THE VERY LEAST HORRIBLE ET'S, AND THE VERY WORST SMACKING THE WALL. TO AVOID THOSE ISSUES SEVERAL MANUFACTURERS OFFER TIRES DESIGNED FOR TRACTION ON THE STRIP. IF YOU HAVE A CAR THAT SEES DOUBLE DUTY ON THE STREET AND STRIP THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF DOT TIRES AVAILABLE, RADIALS AND BIAS PLIES. TO MEET DOT REQUIREMENTS THEY HAVE TO MEET STANDARDS OF HYDROPLANE RESISTANCE, SIDE WALL STIFFNESS, AND TREAD DEPTH. BIAS PLIES ARE MADE FROM A SOFT COMPOUND WHICH WORKS

GREAT ON THE STRIP BUT WEARS OFF PRETTY FAST ON THE STREET. THESE ARE DESIGNED TO GO STRAIGHT AND HOOK HARD. NOW TECHNICALLY THEY STILL ARE DOT APPROVED, BUT THEY HAVE A VERY SOFT SIDEWALL THAT WRINKLES AND ARE NOT DESIGNED FOR ANY TYPE OF CORNER. DRAG RADIALS ARE ALSO MADE OF A SUPER SOFT COMPOUND BUT THEY HAVE A STIFFER SIDEWALL AND ARE A BIT MORE STREET FRIENDLY. NOW DUE TO THE SOFT COMPOUND, THEY WEAR EXTREMELY FAST ON THE STREET AS WELL, BUT THEY GIVE A BEST OF BOTH WORLD SITUATIONS FOR STREET AND STRIP USE, AND THEY ARE STILL A PROVEN PERFORMER EVEN ON HIGH END CLASSES LIKE THE FAMED X-275 RACING. WHEN IT COMES TO DEDICATED PURPOSE BUILT DRAG CARS, NO

MATTER THE HORSEPOWER LEVEL, A TRUE RACING SLICK IS THE BEST CHOICE. THESE TIRES ARE FOUND ON EVERYTHING FROM STOCK ELIMINATOR ALL THE WAY UP TO TOP FUEL DRAGSTER. NOW THESE ARE NOT DOT APPROVED. SO DON'T GET CAUGHT RUNNING THEM ON THE STREET. STIFF FINES ARE KNOWN TO BE GIVEN. RACING SLICKS ARE DESIGNED FOR ALL OUT TRACTION WITH NO TREAD DESIGN TO MAXIMIZE THAT CONTACT PATCH, AND THEY HAVE AN EXTREMELY SOFT SIDEWALL THAT WRINKLES ON THE INITIAL HIT TO ABSORB THAT DRIVELINE SHOCK, AND IT'S AN INTEGRAL
