THE COOLEST THING ABOUT IT IS WE DIDN'T HAVE TO SPEND A WHOLE BUNCH OF TIME BUILDING IT IN ORDER TO GO FOUR WHEELING. WE SIMPLY PICKED IT UP AND BROUGHT IT HERE, BECAUSE INSIDE OUR ENCLOSED TRAILER IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TYPE OF EXTREME OFF ROADING.

THIS IS A 2014 POLARIS 1,000 SIDE BY SIDE, AND YOU'RE GONNA SEE THESE ALL OVER YOUR LOCAL OFF ROAD PARK. NOW YEAR WE'VE GOT SOME UPGRADES PLANNED FOR THIS RIG BACK IN THE SHOP. BUT BEFORE WE TAKE IT APART, WE HAD TO BRING IT OUT AND JUST SEE HOW EXTREME IS ONE OF THESE RIGHT OFF THE SHOWROOM FLOOR.

DRIVING THIS RAZOR IS A BLAST. 1,000cc, DUAL OVER HEAD CAM, EFI ENGINE HAS PLENTY OF POWER TO MAKE THIS MACHINE FLY OVER SOME ROUGH TERRAIN, POWER UP STEEP HILLS. 16 INCHES OF TRAVEL ON THE AARM SUSPENSION UP FRONT AND TRAILING ARMS IN THE REAR WITH MID MOUNTED COIL OVERS TO GIVE US 18 INCHES OF TRAVEL OUT BACK. AGGRESSIVE STYLING, A WIDE STANCE, AND WELL THOUGHT OUT COCKPIT, CENTER MOUNT GAUGE CLUSTER, BUCKET SEATS TO KEEP YOU PLANTED WHILE RIDING, AND DISC BRAKES ALL THE WAY AROUND TO ALLOW YOU TO THROW OUT THE ANCHOR WHEN NEEDED.

WITH LOCKED AXLES FRONT AND REAR, IT'S EASY TO STAY IN CONTROL EVEN WHEN YOU LIFT A TIRE DESCENDING INTO SOME STEEP GULLIES. BUT WHAT ABOUT CRAWLING? I TOSSED OUR RAZOR INTO MY FAVORITE TRAIL AT THE PARK, AND WAS SURPRISED HOW WELL IT COULD HANDLE SOME SERIOUS OFF CAMBER ROCK CRAWLING. HAVING 107 HORSEPOWER TO GIVE US EXTRA WHEEL SPEED WHEN NEEDED ALSO HELPED. OH, IT'S DEEP! OH MY GOODNESS! ALRIGHT, I'VE GOT TO ADMIT IT, WHEN THESE SIDE BY SIDES FIRST STARTED SHOWING UP AT THE OFF ROAD PARK I DIDN'T GET IT. THEY KINDA JUST LOOK LIKE BIG GO CARTS TO ME. BUT NOW THAT I'VE DRIVEN ONE A LOT, I'VE GOT TO SAY, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM. THERE'S ONLY TWO PROBLEMS. NUMBER ONE YOU GET A LITTLE HELMET HAIR WHEN YOU'RE RIDING. NUMBER TWO, PRICE. THIS 1,000 COMES IN AT JUST UNDER $20,000 DOLLARS. THAT'S A LOT TO ASK FOR VEHICLE THAT YOU CAN ONLY DRIVE OFF ROAD. I MEAN THAT'S ALMOST AS MUCH AS YOU'D SPEND

ON A GOOD COMMUTER CAR. AND IT'S NOT LIKE YOU CAN DRIVE THIS RAZOR

TO WORK, OR CAN YOU? A LOT OF STATES ARE STARTING TO ADOPT STREET LEGAL PROGRAMS FOR SIDE BY SIDES.

SO ADAPTER A POLARIS RAZOR TO DRIVE ON THE STREET IS POSSIBLE. YOU JUST NEED TO CHANGE OUT A FEW PARTS. FOR US TO BE ROAD LEGAL THE FIRST STEP IS TO INSTALL A SET OF DOT LEGAL TIRES. I CHOSE THE NEW MICKEY THOMPSON DEEGAN 38'S. A GREAT ALL TERRAIN TIRE WITH A TREAD AGGRESSIVE ENOUGH FOR SOME TRAIL RIDING. SIZE, 31 BY 10.5 MOUNTED ON A SET OF RACELINE HEAVY DUTY ALUMINUM WHEELS. WE WILL ALSO NEED A WINDSHIELD. SO I PICKED THIS ONE UP FROM POWER SPORTS PLACE. DESIGNED TO FIT THE CAGE OF OUR RAZOR AND IS MADE FROM HEAVY DUTY LEXAN. IT MOUNTS TO THE TUBING USING REMOVABLE CUSHION CLAMPS. THE RAZOR HAS HEADLIGHTS AND TAILLIGHTS BUT NO TURN SIGNALS. TO ADD THEM I PICKED UP A DUCK'S SIGNAL KIT FROM RLC MOTORSPORTS.

A NEW SIGNAL LEVER IS ATTACHED TO THE STEERING COLUMN, A HORN BUTTON IS MOUNTED IN THE DASH, AND THE HORN UNIT IS MOUNTED UNDER THE HOOD. THE SIGNALS ARE SMALL SINGLE LED'S THAT

MOUNT FRONT AND REAR.

THE LAST PIECE IS A REARVIEW MIRROR SO WE CAN SEE WHAT'S BEHIND US. WITH ALL OF OUR CHANGES NOW COMPLETE, THE NEXT STEP IS ACTUALLY SOME PAPER WORK. WE CAN NOW APPLY IN OUR STATE FOR WHAT'S CALLED A MEDIUM SPEED PERMIT FOR OUR RAZOR. THAT MEANS WE CAN DRIVE IT ON ROADS THAT HAVE A SPEED LIMIT OF LESS THAN 45 MILES AN HOUR. NOW DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU LIVE THOSE CHANGES ARE GOING TO BE DIFFERENT. SO BEFORE YOU START TRYING TO STREET LEGAL UP YOUR SIDE BY SIDE, YOU MIGHT WANT TO GO AHEAD AND JUST CHECK WITH YOUR DMV. BUT ONCE YOU DO, TRUST ME, HAVING THIS IN THE DRIVEWAY IS GOING TO BE SO GREAT. NOW YOU HAVE ESSENTIALLY TWO CARS. WHY WOULD YOU TAKE THE COMMUTER CAR TO DO ANYTHING WHEN YOU'VE GOT A STREET LEGAL RAZOR? COMMUTING TO WORK.

BUT TO BE SERIOUS YOU DON'T STREET LEGAL YOUR SIDE BY SIDE TO RUN ERRANDS, EVEN THOUGH IT'S A GREAT WAY TO SPEND THE AFTERNOON. YOU REALLY DO IT TO MAKE WHEELING TRIPS THAT MUCH EASIER. EVERYTHING FROM A FRONT BUMPER, REAR BUMPER, SPARE TIRE CARRIER, EVEN SOME ROCK SLIDERS AND A ROOF. AND THE BEST THING IS SINCE WE GOT IT STRAIGHT FROM POLARIS, THE POWDER COAT WILL MATCH OUR RAZOR PERFECTLY. I EVEN GRABBED A COUPLE OF CREATURE COMFORT ITEMS. A COUPLE OF SUSPENSION SEATS AND SOME AUDIO SO WE CAN LISTEN TO SOME TUNES WHEN WE'RE ON THE TRAIL. SO THAT IS WHAT WE'LL START WITH. AND THEIR SUSPENSION SEATS USE THE FACTORY SLIDER MECHANISM. AND AFTER TRANSFERRING IT ONTO OUR NEW SEATS, THEY'RE DROPPED BACK ON THE FACTORY MOUNTS.

AND OUR CUSTOM INTERIOR IS COMPLETE. WELL NOT 100 PERCENT COMPLETE. THE OVERHEAD AUDIO PODS ARE DESIGNED BY MTX AUDIO, AND INDEX OFF THE FACTORY ROLL BAR. ONCE INSTALLED AND WIRED UP, WE WILL NOW HAVE A BLUE TOOK READY SOUND SYSTEM WITH INTEGRATED LED LIGHTS. THE ROOF IS A SINGLE ALUMINUM PIECE THAT MOUNTS

NOW TO UPGRADE ANY VEHICLE'S ABILITY OFF ROAD, YOU ALWAYS START WITH THE TIRES. AND I ALWAYS KNEW WE'D BE RUNNING A SET OF THESE INTERCO BLACK MAMBA TIRES. THESE ARE 32.5 INCHES TALL AND THEY'RE BASICALLY A

HARDCORE PADDLE TIRE. THEY GIVE US TONS OF TRACTION IN THE DIRT. THE PROBLEM IS WHEN YOU STEP UP TO A LARGE TIRE THAT'S THIS AGGRESSIVE, WELL SOME OF THE STOCK PARTS, THEY'VE GOT TO GO. OUR NEW LARGER TIRES ARE GONNA PUT SOME EXTRA LOAD ON SOME KEY SUSPENSION COMPONENTS. NOW I CONTACTED THE GUYS AT RACER TECH, THEY'RE A

UTV SPECIALTY COMPANY. TOLD THEM WHAT I WAS BUILDING AND THEY SUGGESTED THAT I UPGRADE A FEW KEY COMPONENTS. I'M GONNA START BY BRACING UP THE ARMS BOTH FRONT AND REAR. UP FRONT IT WILL JUST UPGRADE THE PIVOT POINTS FOR OUR AARMS BOTH TOP AND BOTTOM, AND LOCK THEM INTO THIS LARGE SKID PLATE THAT'LL MOUNT ONTO THE BOTTOM OF OUR UTV. ONE OF THE NEAT FEATURES IS THAT IT ALSO INCLUDES THIS WINCH PLATE THAT MOUNTS ON THE TOP, AND THAT'LL ALLOW US TO ADD A WINCH TO THE FRONT OF OUR SIDE BY SIDE. THE NEXT ITEM WE HAVE TO ADDRESS ARE THE TIE RODS. UP FRONT NEW HEAVY DUTY STEEL UNITS WITH SPHERICAL ROD ENDS AT EITHER END. THAT'LL JUST ELIMINATE THE FACTORY TIE ROD END, WHICH IS A COMMON FAILURE POINT ON THE SIDE BY SIDE. OUT BACK HEAVY DUTY ALUMINUM UNITS, WHICH ARE INCREDIBLY LIGHT. BUT THE NICE THING IS NOT ONLY ARE THESE STRONGER THAN THE FACTORY PIECES, THEY'RE NOW FULLY ADJUSTABLE. AND THAT'LL JUST HELP US FINE TUNE OUR SUSPENSION WHEN WE GO OUT RIDING. THE REAR SUSPENSION IS COMPLETELY TORN DOWN, AXLES ARE REMOVED, AND THE TIE RODS PULLED OFF. WITH ALL THE UPGRADES THAT WE'RE THROWING AT OUR UTV, THERE IS NO WAY WE'RE GONNA STICK WITH A SET OF STOCK SHAFTS. THAT IS POSSIBLE THE MOST COMMON FAILURE POINT IN ALL UPGRADED SIDE BY SIDES. SO WE'RE GONNA INSTALL FRONT AND REAR THESE NEW RCV PERFORMANCE HEAVY DUTY HALF SHAFTS. NOW YES, THIS IS THE SAME RCV PERFORMANCE THAT BUILDS AXLES FOR OUR TRAIL TRUCKS, TUBE BUGGIES, AND ROCK BOUNCERS, AND THEY'VE ADAPTED EVERYTHING FROM THAT ABUSIVE ENVIRONMENT DOWN TO THESE SMALLER UNITS FOR UTV.

HIGH ANGLE C/V JOINTS, FULL CHROMOLY SHAFTS WITH

THE SLIP YOKE BUILT INTO THIS FULLY SHIELDED AREA TO PROTECT IT WHEN IT'S ON THE TRAIL. THIS COULD POSSIBLY BE THE LAST SET OF AXLE SHAFTS THAT YOU EVER BUY FOR YOUR UTV.

UP FRONT THE NEW STIFFENING PLATE INDEXES OFF THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL BOLT. STEERING RACK BRACE IS INSTALLED.

AND FINALLY THE INTERCO BLACK MAMBA TIRES ON RACELINE BEAD LOCKS. TO HELP THIS UTV SOUND AS GOOD AS IT LOOKS I'M GONNA DITCH THE STOCK EXHAUST FOR A NEW GIBSON HIGH FLOW DUAL EXHAUST SYSTEM. NOW NOT ONLY DO WE HAVE AN EXTREME LOOKING RAZOR, IT SOUNDS MEAN TOO.

BUT HOW WILL ALL THESE MODIFICAITONS

WORK IN THE DIRT? BACK AT OUR LOCAL OFF ROAD PARK, AND RIGHT AWAY THE RAZOR FEELS MORE AGGRESSIVE. THE NEW GIBSON EXHAUST GIVES US A LITTLE BIT OF EXTRA POWER AND THE SOUND THAT A MONSTER LIKE THIS NEEDS. RCV AXLES AND RACER TECH UPGRADED SUSPENSION COMPONENTS MEANT THAT WE COULD PUSH THIS RAZOR INTO SOME SERIOUS WHEELING SITUATIONS AND NOT WORRY ABOUT BREAKING. PLUS THE NEW BODY PROTECTION OF THE ROCK SLIDERS ALLOW US TO CRAWL OVER SOME SERIOUS ROCKS. SO IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR AN EASY WAY TO GET INTO THE DIRT AND HAVE SOME FUN, MAYBE THERE'S A RAZOR IN YOUR FUTURE.
