Cummins Beat Tesla To The Punch Revealing An Electric Semi

We all know Cummins for producing diesel engines for commercial trucks and pickups but it’s jumping into the world of EVs with both feet. Last week, the Indiana-based company revealed an Urban Hauler Tractor concept that’s pure electric. And they may have stolen a little thunder from Tesla with that move. The notorious electric automakers has plans to reveal its own electric semi later in September.

The 18,000-pound big rig is known as AEOS and is designed to move freight locally, over short hauls. It can carry upwards of 44,000 pounds and the 140-kWh battery pack only takes an hour to charge. The fully operational prototype is only tipped to have 100 miles of range while it’s rumored that Tesla’s yet-to-be-revealed rival may produce 200-300 miles of range. Cummins doesn’t plan to assemble the trucks itself, but instead as a supplier of the battery and driveline system. However, when it hits the market in a couple of years, Cummins says it plans to offer an extended-range model that leverages one of the company’s diesel engines like a generator to charge the battery pack. What do you think, does Tesla have some competition?
