[Jason] You're watching Powernation!

[Brian] What does it really cost to rival a $60,000 Lexus? We started off with a basic 2011 IS250 and see if we can make it look brand new for under six grand. [Jason] New head unit, speakers, and wheels and tires. The finish line is in sight. Let's see if we make it. This is Blacktop Speed Shop. [ Music ]

-This is our 2011 Lexus IS250 that we have dubbed Project Budget Baller. We wanted to see if we could take a 15 year old Lexus and rival a newer model for under $20 grand car included. We already started with this vehicle upgrading the suspension, brakes. We also purchased the aftermarket body kit from China. Yes, it's like Christmas time. We had to color match. We had some minor bodywork to do, and we're almost at the finish line. However, we do have a new infotainment system and some upgraded speakers that we want to do with some wheels and tires to finish out our build. But just because it sounds simple doesn't mean it is. -As Brian mentioned, we're going to be doing a new head unit, and although that may seem simple there's a few things that can go wrong. -You ever bought a radio that come with its own tools? -No. -Me neither, never. -If you have any sort of static electricity or if the batteries connected in it arcs you could fry a computer in the car. This radio is ran through the CAN Bus system, which means they can all communicate with each other. And if you fry one it could cause a problem in the other one. Yeah, I'm just going to plug everything in. If we use it, we use it. If we don't, we don't. Which leads me into the next point with the security system. If you do fry a computer it could set the security system off and then it just won't start the car at all. The wiring could be a problem as well because it came from China. I have never in my life seen so many connectors for a radio. Hopefully we're going to show you a few things to keep that from happening, and we've only got 24 hours to get it done. Again, I'm going to ask this one more time. Can we go back to metal? I'm going to try my best not to break this because if we do break this you can't get that in 24 hours. Me and plastic have a love hate relationship, and it's mostly hate. Who designed this connector? Here you go. I don't want it. You can have it. What is that? There is 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 going into the back of the radio on this. Oh, there's eight plugs. I found another one. All right, thank you. I was just about to say, I'm giving you one chance. -It's the baby. -What is that? What is the blue thing up top? -It is the TPMS box. -No, seriously. -Probably won't fit back in there though. -Well after fighting with this for 20, 30, 45. After fighting with this for 45 minutes, I finally got it out. This is the head unit, but the only part we're changing is from this line right here up. This is all going to go away. We're going to get a screen for your CarPlay, Android Auto, all that fun stuff. But in order to take this apart and get the screen onto this there's just Phillips heads in the side of it right here that holds just the face on. I'm going to rip that off and see if everything I said is true or not because I have no idea. Round out the Phillips heads too while I'm at it. Now it's out. Got it. We'll be gentle with this though. It's got a fan. Where does that plug go? So this is the base model system. We're taking that out, and we're gonna put this in. It's a nice upgrade. Most new cars come with CarPlay and all this anyway. It's nice and light, too. It's actually lighter than that. -It looks super clean, precise, you know. -It looks factory. You don't get that kind of stuff with China parts very often. So it's nice to see that it's well-built. We may be speaking too soon. We haven't plugged in and tested it here. I don't like this. This says hole saw in big words right there. -What are we going to hole saw for a bolt in application? -I don't know. [ Music ]

Upgrading your car stereo is easy unless your computer decides it's not.

[Brian] Keeping with our budget build theme that we have going we just went to our local car audio place here in town and bought some average, just mediocre speakers. Nothing extensive or expensive, and it keeps us right in line for what we're trying to do but sounds better than factory. [ Music ]

You know these newer cars with all this plastic on them looks a lot more complicated than what it is most of the time. You just have to take your time and figure out where all your fasteners are. Still not too bad though. One thing you really gotta watch for is the cables connecting the door lock handle and the latch mechanism together because they will snap off and break. So really take your time and pay attention that too. Ole paper cone factories. [ drill humming ] [ Music ]

So we also got some universal adapters. As you can see, this is all an inclusive or one unit. Speaker's actually made into the mount. So while doing this we had to purchase the adapter kit to go with it. But this should allow us to bolt it right back in where it goes from the manufacturer. [ Music ]

Just make sure you got everything that you need for your kit when you get started. Luckily these are pretty accessible. Easy to get to. [ Music ]

We've got plenty of room with our pigtail as well. So we'll get it where it's close. [ Music ]

Now when this adapter and factory plug goes intact should snap right in. Let's see, green cable on top. [ Music ]

If we had the battery in it we could check and make sure everything works up to this point. I think we're good to go. Also, I do have a surprise for Jason that he just don't know about yet. Pretty bad ass by the way. [ Music ]

You playing Monopoly? -Small straw hat. -You get game pieces with every radio purchase. -We're never going to get anything done. -Can you hear that? -Yeah, sounds good. -You can hear it? Nice. -It said something about Brian being a loser. [ impact driver humming ] That one right there. No, nope, you can get your own. -It's raining connectors. -I'm just going to plug everything in. If we use it, we use it. If we don't, we don't. That's all the slack on it anyways. So don't pull it any more. I have never in my life seen so many connectors for a radio. [ Music ]

Those are the old ones out of the old radio cause the old radio's plastic. Hold on. Let me kind of set it there. Wait a minute. Security's blinking though. So that means that's working. It's down here now instead of up top. I'm not doing that right now. -You ready? Don't do it. -Too late. [ Music ] -What the? -We got a Lamborghini. -This is a Lexus. -Hooray! -Now just make sure the fans and all that stuff work. It's all reading right. Dude that's so cool. That radio's so badass looking. -Well the hard part is done for now. Everything works so far of what we tested. We're going to have to go through a little bit of setup on it. Mess with the radio configuration cause there's two different ways you can run that. Mess with the Bluetooth, mess with the CarPlay, the Android Auto. Gotta figure all that out, but for now it is done. So now we can move on to making sure the speakers work and everything as well. -$20 for a Rolls Royce feature and four wheels and tires for the cost of one factory replacement.

[Brian] Now that we got our speakers finished up in our car we're going to install some custom puddle lights that we purchased pretty cheap off the internet. We want something to personalize our vehicle and stay within our budget. So this is another added touch that we can do pretty cheap. These lights that we did purchase, they come with its own tool as well. Pretty neat. Just a two pronged clip and they come right out. Now the ones we purchased are projector style, and they had the Lexus logo insignia in them. So gonna be awesome looking. We'll plug this up and they are fully adjustable as well. From the bottom of the light, you just push it forward or rearward. Whichever way you want it to project on the ground. So basically it's an LED bulb, which is a light emitting diode. So no heat production unlike a standard halogen bulb, first of all. Second of all, they have personalized script that they put over the actual bulb itself inside that it shines through. So it shows, I guess the negative technically of the insignia that's on the bulb and that's how it works. Just like a projector screen. You know, we cut the lights out a little bit in here so you could really tell. Man, it sure does look good. It doesn't have to be for a Lexus specifically? These are all customizable. You can get pictures. If you named your ride that would be something you could put in here. Just another personal touch on the cheap sticking with our budget build and available for any make and model you want. You're gonna love this. [Jason] What are you gonna show me? Those are cool. I've seen those on a couple cars before. I didn't know if this car would have them or not. -Just a little touch, you know what I mean? Not over the top. -How much were they? -Less than $20 bucks for a set of four. -So for $20 bucks now we have a Rolls Royce is what you're telling me? -Correct, but it's spelled wrong. -It's fine. Just squint at it. -But at night, dark outside, it's going to be extremely bright. Even showing up right now. -Honestly it's pretty bright in here and it's still pretty bright on the ground. Does it still light up the door jamb? It does. -So if we would have thought a little bit more in depth about it we probably could have got Budget Baller wrote in it, but I thought this fits the build. -This is better. -Yeah, 100 percent. All in all, best $20 bucks we've spent yet. -For $20 bucks you can't beat it. I've never owned a car that's had lights right there's to do that with so. -Up next we're going to put our wheels and tires on this vehicle. We obviously have to replace the tires just like we talked about. While still tread depth is good on these tires there are a lot of gashes in the sidewall and some major dry rotting and cracking going on. Now as far as the wheel wise, we could have had these wheels refurbished but come here and check this out. All this curb rash that you see right here. This would have been an expensive repair. Guys if you don't know or have never had wheels repaired before they can actually weld material on here. And then they'll mill it, machine it, paint it, refinish it or whatnot. However, it's an extremely expensive process. These wheels are faded. Somebody already tried to repair these wheels. It looks like old rattle can paint job at best. So it's just super expensive to repair what we already have. So we reached out to our friends at Summit Racing and we purchased some wheels and tires for a lot less than even having the wheels refurbished, much less adding tires to them. So we're gonna get those put on and really change the look of this car. [ Music ] Helps if you take it all the way off. Remember that? I'll try to get my sausage finger in here. [ impact driver humming ] Check this out camera man. See all this dry rot that we have in the actual tread itself? This is what we're talking about, okay? You see the wear bars and plenty of tread still left. However, the tire obviously is going to have to be replaced as dry rotted as it is. Look at the sidewall you can see some cracking going on on the sides. There's gashes in the side of the tread like this. And there's nothing that could be repaired or fixed. Hey now. You just set me up dude. So these are the new wheels that we chose from Summit Racing. A set of wheels and Continental tires from Summit were less than $1,500 bucks and that's a steal. We wanted a black, shiny finish to coincide with our grill that we installed on this car as well. The bezels and the headlights are black. We wanted to keep that menacing look but on the budget price. [ impact driver humming ] Don't forget your X or cross pattern. When you're doing this if you don't have an odd number of lug nuts to keep it in the star pattern as much as possible just don't do the two adjacent nuts side by side. [ impact driver humming ] [ Music ]

We've been waiting on this since we got these wheels. -They took a while to get here but we got them. -Are you ready for this? You think it's going to tuck? -I've got some cutting to do If it don't. -You know, there was one time when I thought we were just going to refurbish the wheel. -Again, we're doing this again? -What about now? -It tucks under there just fine. -You can't tell me that's not bad ass? One other thing, too. For those of you at home that may or may not know this particular model Lexus come with a staggered tire size. So they were larger or taller in the rear than in the front, but we went square across the board. Same tire size all the way around. So we were a little skeptical whether it was going to clear or not but I think it fills the fender wheels perfectly. With the coilovers too it's dead money. What you gonna torque them to? -250. -You gonna jump up and down on it. -Wheels and tires on, stereo's in. Now we find out if our cash was well spent.

[Jason] Let me start the music back over. [Brian] Not until you get done talking? -I wasn't playing it. -Jason, tell the audience what we did. -Now that we got the head unit and the speakers installed we're gonna go ahead, test it out, see how they sound. -It's going to be awesome. What are you laughing at? -You. -Turn it up! Okay, hold on! If it's too loud you're too old. -You're telling me that? Okay! -Here, I got it. -Sounds better. -Not bad man. Much better than factory, and the whole display. -Yeah, I like the screen a lot more. That's my age. It's not your age, sorry. I know you like your buttons and your dials and stuff, but I'll take a screen. -I miss the antenna. -I'm lying. I'd rather have buttons and dials and stuff. -Eight track. -I never got to use one of those. -But just to make sure everybody knows though, we didn't buy anything high dollar, right? -No. -It's the cheapest. -Replaced paper cone speaker with something non-paper cone. Plug and play system. Dude, we knocked it out of the park. -Well this is the cheapest that they had too and it sounds great. -That beat dropped right after you said that. -It sounds good. -Yeah, I love it man. We definitely got done what we need to got done. -Yeah. [ Music ] -Well we finally finished Project Budget Baller. You know in the beginning we started out with a vehicle that fit our build and fit in our budget line that we were looking for with some easy upgrades, with some at home tools, and things you could do in multiple weekends you two could get this done. I really feel like we nailed this on the head and accomplished everything we set out to do. Next thing, take it out and drive it. -Let's go.

-What an improvement. -I like this. I like it. -The stance, the way it handles, the lack of bounce and jounce. I mean, it takes the corners. -It ride like factory but it handles better. -For the money and a three weekend, two weekend, however many weekends it takes you to do this I really think it's impossible to beat this. -So we bought this car with 112,000 miles on it for less than $15 grand. We bought the whole update kit for less than two grand, and we did everything else added together for less than two grand ourselves. So for $20, we built a car that looks like a brand new $60,000 car. -Let's talk exhaust. Cold air intake, regular tune-up. However, Vibrant resonator, super impressed. We put a BRE exhaust system on the back, wheels and tires. Come on, it's a no brainer. -They don't get much better than what we got. And we got sporty tires on it too for if we do take it to the track. Go out, do a couple laps, warm them up, and then you just go have fun. -Yeah, I think the stance is perfect. I think the look is perfect. I think we nailed the budget build aspect, nailed it. -This is a fun car. It really is a fun car. Other people aren't going to know what it looked like before. I mean this car's done well enough where I wouldn't be able to tell. -Touch screen display under $500 bucks. All the functions, GPS in a plug and play system. We didn't cut not the first wire. It was literally the easiest thing that we did probably to this car. Probably the hardest part was the freaking tune-up that we had to do. Coil packs and plugs. We had to pull the whole top of the engine apart just about it seemed like because the intake plenum covered both sides of the engine. -We're also being careful too because if we left this at stock height you'd be able to drive it like a stock car. This thing's low. This isn't dragging frame low but it is almost dragging bumper low. It seems like a lot to me because I've never done anything like this. I've done dealership work. That's not paint. That's not custom. -You know, aftermarket bodywork stuff doesn't have to be the 200 plus, 300,000 hour jobs that you hear of in restoration shops either. It could be stuff that could be done over the weekend with a few hand tools. This has been babied. Somebody who bought this wanted a Lexus for what it is. A luxurious car and babied it around. It's obvious. This car's good for 300,000, 400,000 miles. I mean, it will it no problem. -If we're nice to it. -It would withstand that at Polecat. I'm ready to take off on a road trip. -Well we need two cars. -That is true. What if we bring it back in the shop and put a trailer hitch on there? -What's this thing gonna haul? -Anything you want. -Will it haul my fifth wheel? -Yes, put it on the roof.
