Currently, SUVs are the top dog in non-luxury vehicle sales. But pickup trucks may be in the running to dethrone them soon, as data from Cox Automotive has shown that interest in trucks is at a record high as we approach the Fall of 2023.

How Are Pickup Trucks More Popular in 2023?

According to the data, of prospective customers in the market for a non-luxury vehicle, 36% of them have expressed interest in pickup trucks. Specifically, the top 5 models potential buyers have shown interest in are:

  1. Chevrolet Silverado 1500
  2. Ford F-150
  3. Sierra 1500
  4. Ram 1500
  5. Ford F-250/F-350/F-450 Super Duty

This same data also showed that those interested in SUVs have remained steady at 66%. Interest in cars has gone down from 37% in 2022 to 32% in 2023, and minivans are left untouched with only 5% interest.

Additionally, pickup trucks dominated six of the ten most considered vehicles by occupying the first five slots, and SUVs and cars trailing behind.

Why Are More People Interested in Pickup Trucks?

Midsize pickup trucks are also gaining mainstream traction thanks to modern updates to the Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado, Ford Ranger, and GMC Canyon. So it is certainly possible that more customers will be flocking to these models due to their price points being lower than the MSRPs of the full-size pickup trucks listed above.

Many industry experts believe that more drivers will gravitate toward pickup trucks and SUVs over cars due to them being safer in the event of a collision, as well as the use of their practical utilities to transport passengers, equipment, luggage, tools, and goods.

According to the data, Toyota is ranked the most popular non-luxury brand with 32% of prospective customers considering buying. It was closely followed by Chevrolet (31%) and Ford (30%). Given that Chevrolet has the Silverado and Colorado, and Ford with the F-150, Maverick, and Ranger, the next-gen Toyota Tacoma is going to be fighting in a very intense battleground to corner the market on pickup trucks.
