With the 2024 Ford Mustang being one of the most exciting new vehicles of the year, this new-generation muscle car packs a lot of special features like the mighty 5.0L Coyote V8 engine, remote revving function, and the electronic drift brake to name a few. Performance is a big selling point with this car, but Ford revealed that while this new Mustang is fun to drive, it also takes safety into account for the driver, its passengers, and everyone else on the road.

The automaker revealed that one of its new driver assistance features known as “Exit Warning” will be available on all versions of the 2024 Ford Mustang to help protect other road users like bicyclists, pedestrians, and scooter riders in areas with a lot of road activity.

We’ve all seen that scene in movies where a guy is on a bicycle in the middle of this big chase sequence, and amidst all the chaos, someone in a parked car decides to open their door with perfectly poor timing, causing the guy on the bike to take a dive into the ground. The Mustang’s Exit Warning feature will notify the driver to check their surroundings before they open the door if it senses a vulnerable road user is nearby.

How Does Exit Warning Work?

  • When the Mustang is parked, the radar system located on the rear of the car will sense and identify any vulnerable road users that are moving at least 4 miles per hour, which is approximately a third the speed of your average cyclist.
  • In the event that a road user is approaching the car and could potentially be physically impacted by the opening door, the Exit Warning will use audible and visual alerts to inform the driver both on the Mustang’s instrument cluster and side-view mirror
  • Once the ignition is turned off, the Exit Warning feature will still remain active and alert for up to three minutes.

While this new safety system is designed to promote overall safety in park, we can only hope that this same level of concern can be demonstrated by reckless Mustang drivers at any coffee & cars meetup.
