HorsePower Builds

Yeah.

Hey, welcome to Horsepower. We're kicking it off from Piedmont Dragway

and advise you to sit down, buckle up and hold on to something.

It's the north,

the south shootout

and it might get messy.

Ladies

and gentlemen,

tonight, the second annual $50,000 big dog challenge, it all began with a battle of words between the eight mile track's owner, Bob Big dog, Harris and racing. Great. Pat me

before long, the first uncivil war of drag racing was underway,

a field of pro street racers from the north

taking on the top southern dogs from Harris's home track.

The inaugural shootout was the fiercest battle since the real civil war

memories of it have haunted one racer ever since

you see it was down to the finals when the South's Todd Tuo

lost to Northern Invader, Mark

d'antoni by a few 1000th of a second.

That's

all

right.

We'll get next

year.

So here we are one year later and Todd's back this time with a jury house built Mustang with a supercharged Chevy engine,

a power package you'll use to hopefully avenge last year's failure. You obviously are the man to beat Todd. You got the track record here.

That must have been great. But

what do you think your chances are, I think are pretty good. I feel confident we got real good parts and everything. I

mean,

I feel real good about it.

Just look out

for,

here's what we're gonna tell him. Take a good look at the front of these green cars if he pulls up there because he's gonna see plenty of the back. So if he wants to see the front, he might want to check it in the station area.

No brothers down $50,000 only right here beat my driveway.

Thursday night's qualifying was a heart pounding spectacle in itself.

Fortunately, nobody got hurt even in this cross lane, crash

in round one. Mui

momentarily silenced the local crowd with a 428 et

capturing top qualifying honors,

but it didn't last long cutter

staged his power pony and made his quickest ones ever. 422 then a 419

and the whole fans whipped wild.

The air is good for a blower car tonight. It's really gonna look good tonight Saturday. Probably slow down. Some.

Are you proud of this guy?

Yes,

very much so,

I

think we got a great chance. We got

Turo and Rick Moore and me and a bunch of other tough guys.

Meanwhile, for the north, it's

C d'antoni one and two guys. What's it gonna take to catch this tter

old guy over here?

Well, we don't uh, pay attention to qualifying much. I mean, other than our position, I mean, naturally you want to run fast. But,

you know, we're Race Day guys. I think we're gonna put a lot of pressure on him.

You know, me and Pat are pretty much hoping one of us gets him first.

There's a chance one out of the two of us will get him, but whoever does get him will have a tough battle on his hands if he thinks he's gonna win.

Well, here we are showdown day in the north versus the South shootout one more round of qualifying. And then it's dog eat dog for $50,000. The southern racers may have,

this is their home track, but I just met one of them who's lucky to be here at all.

It was here at Pete Mud Dragway just a few months ago that Donny Krasinski came to race his Camaro

suddenly starting line of freak ni

explosion and Donnie is trapped inside this horrible inferno for 14 seconds.

This is

like 14 seconds. Got like 14 minutes

shook me up a little bit. But I mean, you know, it's just like a horse, you gotta get back on it.

It just uh burnt my forehead where I had my shield up. And that's about the only thing at first.

The man upstairs, he

left me here for a reason.

The last round of qualifying ended with

TAO and UC still number one. And number two,

the stage was set for the four rounds of eliminations of the drag racing war between the states.

Ok. Will the South get revenge or will history repeat itself? We'll find out after the break, don't you go away?

This is a, a

drag trip special right here.

South.

I'm hoping to have to put a new set of bleachers in for next year because I think if the South wins, they'll probably te these games,

$50,000 can change a lot of people's life.

It's not like we're gonna run for 5000 and we were running for 2000. We're running for a nice trophy. We're running for 50,000 bucks real money

and it's winner take all. It's not, we're dividing it out amongst everybody.

Uh Not only that bragging rights, this is about, I want to be the big dog. I wanna be the man for 2004 and I want $50,000 put in my checking account

in first round eliminations. Tarrow posted another 419 sending Hank Hill back to his trailer.

D'antoni took to the weeds, beating the South Charles Harris

and in a huge upset, William Brown downs Pat

M's tire shaking Pontiac by 900.

Revenge was sweet in the semis.

Astuter

lays down another 419 to easily put away last year's champ d'antoni

heading into the finals against the North's Tony.

Ok. Two racers left two trophies only once for the winner though. Who's it gonna be.

We're feeling pretty good.

Uh, we're running pretty good and the tracks pretty good and

we're pretty evil with

tuo one win to me, one win to him. So, this is a tiebreaker.

Yeah, I was pretty pumped up on that one.

What's it gonna take now? What do you do? What's the plan?

I just go back out there and try to do my routine deal there

a little night. I

think it will be good enough.

And your uncle come on again. I guess that's part of the secret, isn't it?

I make a lot of laughs in a year. I'll probably make three hour laps in a year. I

make

three.

We are in the big dog

race, Jim Till

is,

there's

about to

fire it up. So with all Southern fingers crossed the big moment.

J

Teel cuts a quicker light but Todd Teow

quickly passes him on his way to another incredible 419

avenging last year's heartbreaking loss and he's now $50,000 richer.

Thank you. Thank you. That's what they call the South. Get her done.

So at least until next year, the South reigns and the biggest new, old rivalry

and the record

one and one

in the one and only big dog shootout.

You'll be

proud.

Hey, welcome back. You know, for a lot of guys, muscle cars like this. 69 mach one are. What true performance is all about. A

big block bolted between the fenders of a lightweight body

and even with upgrades like a high tech suspension,

big brakes and, and overdrive transmission. Well, when it comes time to feed that hungry big block. Well, the carburetor is still the number one choice

with over 100 years of car building experience under its belt. It's not surprising that Holly is a very popular name

when it comes to choosing a performance carburetor, but as good as they are, well, there's still a little bit of room for improvement. For instance,

a few years back, Holly introduced this HP series of carbs and it's a pretty cool piece. Check it out. It's got stiffening ribs here on the main body.

The choke housing has been removed from the air horn, plus it has radius venturia and screw in air bleeds. Now, this thing is practically race ready right out of the box. But even so it still had a few problems.

For instance,

the metering blocks are castings that are susceptible to prostate problems and well, that can have a definite effect on the carbs ability to meter fuel. Plus they use an aluminum base plate here and

well, they can warp and distort whenever they're tightened down to the main body. Plus anybody that's over tight in one of these mounting studs here

knows how easy it is to break off one of those ears.

So Holly is engineered some new billet replacement parts to upgrade your HP and prevent a lot of those problems. Now, what they've got is a new billet metering block and throttle plate that are gonna offer significant improvements and they're gonna make your car a lot more tunable.

Check this out the metering blocks feature, idle bleed and power valve restrictors plus adjustable emulsion bleeds to help you really dial in your fuel curve.

The billet throttle plate makes adjustments to the secondary throttle blades a lot easier by moving this adjustment screw from the bottom

to the top. Now, in the past, you actually had to remove the car from the intake manifold just to access it.

Of course, installing those new parts is pretty simple, but first, you have to disassemble a carb. Now we've already blown out the bowls and the metering blocks. And the next step is to remove the six screws that attach the base plate to the main body.

Now that the carbs apart, it's a good idea to take a straight edge and

lay it along the mating surfaces for both the metering block and down here at the base plate. Now, what you're doing is checking to make sure that you got good flat true surfaces for everything to seal to. Otherwise you could have some internal leaks and well, all the money that you spend on those good parts is gonna be wasted.

If the damage isn't too bad, you can actually true these things up with a flat file. But if the thing is really out of whack. Well, it's best that you send this car body out to machine shop and let them square it up.

When you begin reassembling your car, make sure you use new gaskets,

then bolt up the new base plate.

If your old carb is dialed into your combination, go ahead and transfer the jets and the power valve to the new metering block,

then hold the metering block in place.

Why you position the fuel ball

and finally everything is held in place with four screws.

Make no mistake. These mods are intended for a race inspired carb. In fact, if you check out the base plates, you're gonna see that you'll lose the vacuum port for your P CV,

as well as the distributor advance. Now over here on the billet piece, you'll see that the throttle blades are pre drilled. Now, what they're gonna do is allow more air in to compensate for aggressive cam timing

and a weak signal to the booster.

Of course, while you're upgrading your carb, you might also want to pick up an assortment of air bleeds

and jets to really help you get it dialed in.

Oh, and how about a billet fuel

log to ensure an apple supply of race gas?

Now, all these improvements are gonna give you more reliable and consistent performance from your existing HP CARB.

But if a new car purchase is in your future, well, you're gonna be happy to know that Holly has already done all the hard work for you with the new Ultra HP CARB.

Now, these things are available in CFM ratings from 650 to 950 CFM and you can even get them in the Dominator Series. Now, if you still believe that a carb is the best route, well, following the path to more power just got a whole lot easier.

Of course, you want to stick around because we got more horsepower coming at you right after this

horsepower T V's Quick Tech is brought to you by

Wyotech.

There's nothing like re chroming to bring a bumper back to life on a project car. We're like this PTO here.

But when it comes to all the trim pieces like this rocker molding

man, you could spend a fortune at the chrome shop. But if you're willing to spend a little time and a lot of elbow grease,

you can make this baby like new and save a lot of money

here. She is Greg. Let her get started now.

All right. Well, Joe, the first thing we need to do is identify the highs and lows. Uh We can do that in two different ways. One, we could actually go with a visual check

or we could actually use a file.

The first thing we need to do is lightly slide this file across this piece of stainless.

And now we have where the dull spots is our highs

and any other shiny spots will be a low, you file it and get down into the bottom. Now, we need to get into sanding

to sand it. I'd like to start out with 80 grids

and then we'll move to 120

then probably up to 320.

Ok? And after 320 the, the Buffalo should take out those scratches.

All right. Good job on that area. Greg looks ready to b but I'm not gonna let you off the hook so easy.

Now,

this one here on the edge, this little spot looks like a lot more of a challenge.

It definitely is.

OK. What we got is a lip in here. Now, we need

to somehow get a tool back in there to push this back out. So

as you can see on this side, it has been pushed in from something, maybe a stone chip or something like that.

So now we need to get that pushed up.

I'm gonna grab

this tool here. This is actually a slapping spoon,

but just because I like the tip of it.

I wanna get down into that edge. I'm gonna use this tool for that job.

Let me pull this up here.

Get the hammer out

and see if we can push this down a little bit.

Great work. Getting those stents out, Greg. It's all smooth and ready to buff. What's first?

All right. The first thing we wanna do, Joe is we wanna use

uh an

Emory

compound. OK. We guys are gonna apply this

on to what they call a sle wheel.

Ok.

The sle wheel,

the main purpose of this wheel is to get rid of some of the scratches and finally marks that we've previously made.

Ok.

And then we'll go on to a spiral cut wheel

and we'll actually do the same compound again. And then we'll use a loose wheel

and we'll use like a softer, some kind of, uh, maybe like a jeweler's rouge

or some kind of emery, something like that. Some look for more softer metals. It'll bring that real bright luster.

All right, Greg. Let's check out what you got here.

Oh, man. Now, just check out the difference in this and

this that we started out with. Now the whole trim piece would take how long to finish

a

piece this size, I'd say about a day, day and a half. Wow, that's a lot of time and elbow grease. But just think you do the work yourself and

keep a lot of money in your pocket

real

good.

And

you like big performance in a compact package.

Well, check out this electric fuel pump for carbureted engines from Edelbrock.

Now, the body is machined from a solid piece of billet

that houses a precision motive

composite rotor for longer pump life

and also features these lightweight carbon fiber veins for less friction and wear.

Now, it comes with a preset internal regulator that you can change by turning the screw here. Now you also get a rubber isolated mounting bracket and, well, it all sells for about 100 and 80 bucks. Hey, if you've got a diesel powered hauler with an aftermarket programmer, well, now you can run it at its highest horsepower setting

and

still pull a heavy trailer.

This outlook controller from bully dog actually performs like an electronic governor to control power output when it senses excessive high water or exhaust temps or even transmission slippage.

Plus it'll let you record and store numbers for horsepower torque speed and a whole lot more

the outlook comes with a mounting bracket.

A parameter hook up and a harness with a price that's under 400 bucks.

Now, you can give your muscle car a modern day ride without major modification with the strong arm system from air ride technologies. Now up front, you have the shock wave, air spring with upper and lower control arms. You also get this cross bar and the ball joints are already installed

out back. You get the cool ride system with air springs shocks and this adjustable pan hard bar

together. You've got a bolt on system with no cutting or welding required.

How much cash is required? About 2350 for both. All right, we have some required TV viewing for you. It's our next horsepower. Of course, we'll see you then.
