Hey, are you hungry for some super serious horsepower
that you've come to the right place
today on horsepower TV.
It's a street car rumble at Great Lakes Dragway. We'll take you to the track for the action
and under the hood of a 2000 horse pro street racer
plus sport compacts are hot these days. We'll show you how to shop for a budget Tuer car.
So hang on for horsepower TV.
That's clear.
Let's set it down right here. All right.
Hey, welcome to a hot new season of horsepower TV. Whether you've been with us over the years or just joined us for the first time. You better believe horsepower is what we're all about.
Yeah. Now, how about 2000 horsepower on three stages of Nitrous? Now, this race car is Pat Moy's
pro street Firebird and as Joe is gonna show you, it's part of the biggest rivalry ever in pro street racing history
Point. Lighthouse is a landmark here in Wasse Wisconsin,
an historic windy port city on Lake Michigan.
Quinn Point is the oldest lighthouse still operating here in the Great Lakes area.
It's been guiding boats through storms since 1880
but it's never seen a storm like the pro street rubble. You're about to witness.
We're ready to start it up here at Great Lake Dragway. The legendary Great Lake Dragway for the Universal Street Car Nationals brought to you by the National Street Car Association. Hang on to the dead one in the bleachers. Baby. We're gonna rock you out.
Great Lakes Dragway is one of the oldest tracks in the country still in operation. Now, all the legends have raced here, including the one and only Tony Christian. That is before he went on to become part of the greatest rivalry in pro street history.
Christian
all time pro street champion in the N MC A. Pat
Muy, reigning pro street king of the NFC A frequently brings off the track
bitterest of rivals in the cockpits of their cars in the early eight mile days of the NFC A
Tony and his famed 57 Bel Air
at in his Spinach green 69 Camaro
at their first race in Rockingham. It was Pat winning with a 472 at 100 and 55 miles an hour. We're real happy with our performance. That was real fast. We've been consistent all day. Uh
I can't say enough my whole crew to car to hold me.
Hey, my hat's off the pad. I mean, he really surprised me.
I ran good.
I mean, I don't have excuse one
cat kicked my butt,
but it was Tony who earned the number one decal
for three seasons in a row,
knocking down opponents with the quickest street car and the quickest tongue at the track. I'm not gonna let anybody bother me anymore.
I just come out and I'm gonna stay calm. Be my nice, usual calm self
win.
I don't know. I might start in a month. What are you trying to aggravate me
now, who could forget the feud fueling up at this event as the series went quarter miles.
Busy was the first post reader to run 200 miles an hour
in a qualifying run against Tony in his new red Firebird. And everybody remembers the first one. They don't rent me the second one. You know, so we're happy,
Muy
didn't run 200 miles an hour. If he'd take that thing off the front of his license plate,
he'd find out. He didn't.
That's tripping the clock. You ain't no racer. Racers don't cry. Get where you run.
I'm gonna beat you into the ground this year. So, get ready.
Oh, but Tony was ready
after Bussey lost to Mike Moran in eliminations. Tony put Moran away
before beating Danny Scott in the finals with a 712 that you guessed at 200 miles an hour.
People are telling me they're coming after me. Come on
because I'm sitting here, I'm ready. If you wanna come on,
let's go.
And so rivalry War Zone this weekend at Union Grove, Wisconsin.
Tony's hometown track making a guest appearance in the series where Pat rules the pro Street Roost,
he's cocky right now, but we'll knock that out of him. We've done it before. I mean, uh,
he'll, uh, say what he's got to say. But, uh, when it gets down to the starting line then
all the, uh, BS stops. Hey, broken clock is right, two times a day. He might be me.
But he's got to remember the four laws out here at Union Grove dragway.
Don't tell you, Superman's cape.
Don't spit in the wind. Don't pull the mask off the lone Ranger
and don't race tone at his home track. Now get the hell out of here because I got work to do and I'm done doing interviews. See you later.
Of course, we're gonna take you back to the track in a minute to show you who wins that war, the pro street Warriors. But first let's take a look at the hardware that it takes to get a car down the track in the sixes. And who better to give us that tour than the owner of the car. Pat Mussey. Good to see you again. Jeff. Good seeing you now, Pat, we've always hung our hat on horsepower here in the shop. And
what do you say? We start with the engine?
Well, this is our latest, greatest deal here. This is the most horsepower. You'll see.
Well, Chuck, we start this bad boy out with a Donovan five inch bore spacing block reason why we use a five inch bore spacing. We can get a bigger bore in it. We run a 4675 bore
and a 5125 stroke which gives us our 707 cubic inches. We run 15 to 1 compression.
We run a Sonny Leonard cylinder head, which is based on a big box Chevrolet,
but it's a symmetrical intake port and then we feed it all with fuel injection.
Now, that's a pretty exotic looking induction. But you still haven't told me what this thing makes on the motor.
The engine makes 1300 horsepower on engine alone. No, nitrous. All right. Well, nitrous three stages. What's that all about?
Well, this is a dry nitrous system.
We inject nitrous into the runner by itself. All the fuel is in re
and through the injection.
I see
this is our first stage that comes on when I release the clutch. Then we go to our 2nd and 3rd which are activated off of timers. When both those systems are on. We're making over 2000 horsepower. Wow. Now, 2000 horsepower still doesn't do any good if you can't get it down the track. So let's see what it takes to hook all that up. Let's do it
under here.
We have a Lenko five speed transmission which is coupled to the engine with a dual disc ram clutch, which by the way, I brought an extra one in. Here comes Chuck way ahead of your path.
This is a floater which is sandwiched between two centered iron discs.
Of course, they're in this clutch unit. This is the basic clutch unit.
We have two ways of adding weight to this. This is called the base. We can screw the adjuster in and out and we can go from 900 pounds to 1800 pounds of pressure quite a range.
That's what you feel at your foot. When you release the clutch,
then the counterweight will take over. And that's where we add this bolt. And you see a nut and a piece of heavy metal that's mallory,
heavy metal there. And depending on track conditions, how much weight we put on the finger got you. Now, as sophisticated as this clutch is, I would imagine the rear suspension is every bit as trick. Yes, it is.
This is a basic chrome Maui Willie
Rose chassis.
Then we have an adjustable floor link which you see the different holes for different positions.
My partner Dom Rem came up with this wishbone, which we like because it stiffens the rear suspension a little bit and controls our left to right movement.
And this is something new. Roger Lamb at lame components came up with, it's a double adjustable shock. We've always had the upper adjustment. Now we have a lower adjustment.
I can run it stiffer on a starting line,
loosen it up when I shift into third to get down some of those bumpy racetracks. We're on it
then of course, we put it all on the ground with a, who's your slick? The, who's your slick? Seems to be the tire of choice right now. It has the right compound and the right side wall for us. Well, we're gonna go back to the track in just a minute and join Pat Tony and Jose. See Hall, This technology comes together so you stick with us.
Tony. Christian is a loop.
No, he is not.
Welcome back to Great Lakes Dragway where the Big Pro Street rubble is about to roar into elimination.
This is my house right here. Great Lakes Dragway
here. He could talk
all about the NFC A being his
husband
that
I've won more races here than I've ever won in my life.
That one back
here pretty
good.
Now it's down to who's the best and we'll find out after this deal.
All right, I'm gonna pull up
first. A quick look at qualify.
All right, we'll sit here and wait for you
to go.
Pat had the power but also a little too much clutch for the rough track.
This run was good for only 703 at 196.
Then it was Christian's turn
and here on his hometown track for the first time in years, he lays down a top qualifying 690 at 204 miles an hour.
The
number
6,
9200
and four
a loose out there. I think only one shoot came out.
Oh, well,
we're alive.
Meanwhile, the pits were alive with debates among racers of all ages. Tony's got more horsepower
more.
I
don't know.
Competition here.
Better tell her Bill who's better
against one.
Finally after his third qualifying pass just before round one of eliminations
ji
opted for a motor switch. A car hit the bump and jumped off the ground
and it went on a limiter and it leaned the cylinder out. So we don't want to take a chance racing it today.
So we made the decision to change it. Now,
now with a new bullet bolted in Bussey faces Billy Clinton in round one,
still having problems with the track. Pat only manages a 734 as Clinton breaks.
Meanwhile, Christian gets a fire run posting another 690 this time at 205 miles an hour.
And in round two comes the first shock of the weekend
as Mike Bowman beats Mui
with a 699 to Pat 743.
This is a total curveball. We were working on down track. It was leaving straight all weekend long and all of a sudden I went the clutch go. It just went dead left.
So I don't know if we got a bad set of tires or something screwy, but it just went dead left.
Then after knocking off Bryan Goldstein in semi final action. The post for
stage was sacked
in the finals of limited street. It was Dwayne Waltrip in a close win over Mike LICA
mccoy
took super modified with this 890 at 165.
Dale
Pittman took nostalgia for a street beating Tony Butts by a tip.
And Mark d'antoni powered his new 55 Chevy to an outlaw street win at 682 at 203.
And now it's the veteran Christian against young Mike Bowman
and it's a close one until Tony gets out of the groove and Bowman passes him with a 692 at 100 96 miles an hour. His first ever NSC A win.
Yeah, just got out of shape real bit.
I just got out of shape. I saw you hitting the brakes and I knew you must have gotten out of shape.
Yeah, I was going over to the rain. It was often a good run and it was hauling ass, but
this is the, this is the quickest and, uh, and right there with the fastest, uh, Mike Moran does my engines and, and he says we're gonna put a tune up on it and we're gonna win this race
and,
you know, it was off and running from there.
Wow, what a wild and surprising finish. Certainly not what we expected. Hey, Pat, I gotta ask you, did you ever figure out what was wrong with your car in that semifinal run? Well, we actually just flat out, overpowered the racetrack. We had too much power for the track. You've seen the same thing happen to Tony. Sometimes the fastest car doesn't always win the event. I really was looking forward to race Tony at this race, but sometimes
it happens very interesting. But you guys just finished a match race down in Texas. What happened down there? Yes, we did. And that ended in a draw again, two for him and two for me. So we're gonna have to finish it somewhere else.
The MC Christian rivalry continues. When are you gonna race again?
Well, as a matter of fact, I got racing tonight, I gotta get this car loaded on a truck and get going. I'll help you and I'll get out of the way. Good luck.
Horsepower TV S hot parts is brought to you by Wyotech.
The nation's premier technical training school.
Hey, if you're trying to get ahead of the competition, well, then you'll wanna check out these new aluminum
tech heads from Edelbrock. Now they're designed to fit most small block Chevys with a four inch bore or larger. And their high clench combustion chamber promotes more uniform fuel atomization for a more complete burn. Of
course, you can get them in two sizes, 100 and 70 cc intakes for a street performance
or 200 cc intakes for more radical applications. Now, the street heads are fitted with 194 and 155 valves. And of course, the bigger heads get bigger valves, 20 twos and one sixties. Now, they also have guide plates and springs that'll handle. Cam lifts up to 600,000. And of course, the price is pretty easy to handle too
under a grand for a set.
We all know that. Ohm is where the heart is. Unless you're talking about spark plug wires. In that case, you want the lowest resistance to get the highest energy transfer with these 40 plus race wires from Moroso have only 40 ohms of resistance per foot making them the most efficient plug wire you can get.
Now the nickel copper alloy conductor allows maximum power transfer while the special insulation here offers additional RF I and EM I protection. Now they're available in both universal and custom fit applications. So why not take the path of least resistance prices start at about 85 bucks.
Now, here's something that'll lift your spirits as well as your car. It's the new horsepower signature series lift system from Eagle. Of course, they've taken their standard four post lift and added several useful upgrades including this aluminum storage platform, a sliding tool tray, a pair of steel ramps and of course these casters for mobility. Now, here's the upgrade that I like best is a new power supply box that puts air pressure and electrical power right where you need it, check this out for electrical outlets,
air pressure outlets built in regulator and of course, these brackets to hang your power tools on it. Now for durability, it's been powder coated horsepower red. Of course. Well, now I think I read somewhere that this thing will hold seven 1000 pounds. I guess they were right. Give me a break. Now, it also runs on 100 and 10 volt house current and we opted out for the XL T model which lifts 10 inches higher and the platform is 20 inches longer than the standard version. Well, I think you've jabbered long enough. Now, I will tell you that it starts at 4500 bucks and that includes free shipping. Oh, like to my home.
Sometimes you could be revolting. Oh, stop. But it should come as no shock to you. That tuna compacts are the rage these days. Oh, sort of a current trend, man. You really know what's, what don't you? You'll see what horsepower TV is doing about it right after this.
Hey, welcome back to the horsepower shop.
Like a lot of you guys, Chuck and I cut our teeth on American muscle cars like the 71 Chevelle here,
but we gotta admit it. There's a whole new generation of gear heads out there on the street.
That's right. And they're every bit as dedicated to pulling the performance out of their cars as we are. They just take a little bit different direction about it.
Now, this year on horsepower TV, we're gonna share some of that passion with you.
In the beginning, there were post war hot rodders blazing down the California saw flats
and other pioneer gear heads hopping up those famed flathead boards.
The next generation of devotees dived into factory muscle cars of the sixties and seventies,
all in the name of cool looks on the street
and hot performance on the strip.
Well, today, yet another new generation carries on the same tradition of enthusiasm for making a high performance statement.
The car names have changed along with their sizes. Some make their power up front, some leave their imprint in dramatically different ways. Call them sport compacts, call them imports, call them tuners. But you have to call this a new gearhead generation. That's for real,
whether they're twisting riches and the driveway like their hot rodding parents and grandparents did
or doing it out on the drag strip where some front wheel drive, four bangers are running nine second quarters.
You'll find them at wild outrageous national events like this one at Moroso Motorsports Park
art, hometown tracks like music city Raceway in Nashville. This is where we found Chris Roden who builds them, races them and shows them living the new tuna lifestyle nonstop.
Well, we've asked Chris to join us here in the shop occasionally as we take on a budget build up of our own. Now, tell me, man, how long you've been into cars? About six years. Now, I started as soon as I got my driver's license, put about three years in my Alma and that's where it's at today. Well, that's really a cool car, but we've got to find one of our own that we can build up here in the shop. Now, as you know, we've got a budget of about $8500 and that includes a purchase price of the car. Sounds cool. But I know just the one.
Well, Chris, what are we gonna go look at V
tech would be great, but it kill your budget. I know where a 94 Honda Civic is. 1.55 speed. It's a cool car, but we'll have plenty of money left over performance parts.
Wow, 3500 bucks. And, hey, the body doesn't look too bad. I wonder how the rest of it looks.
It's got 100,000 miles on it a
bit. The oil has been changed frequently. It's good for 200,000.
Well, I don't see any frame damage and there are no leaks under there. So those are a couple of good signs.
Everything looks to be intact. All the vacuum lines,
all electrical
man. It looks like a deadly driven car. Well, that's good. Now, I just got the title from the owner and, well, the law says if this car's been totaled or salvaged. Well, it has to say so right here on the title. Now, this one's clean. So I guess we're ready to take it for a test drive. All right.
You know, even with the high miles on this thing, the motor sounds solid doesn't leak, it doesn't knock and it doesn't smoke either.
Plus, you know, it steers and it stops straight.
I think we found a keeper. I like it and it won't be hard to get respectable horsepower out of it.
We also have enough money left over to make it look good too.
Well, I guess we've got ourselves a new project car and we got a great show lined up for you next week. Take a peek.
How do you build 1000 horse engine that runs on Puff Gas? We'll take you through the latest in monster motor technology and we'll start popping up our budget Honda with a new intake, high flow header and free flowing exhaust system before strapping it to the
dyno Jet.
All this and more on the next horsepower TV.

We'll take you through the latest in monster motor technology and we'll start popping up our budget Honda with a new intake, high flow header and free flowing exhaust system before strapping it to the
dyno Jet.
