(TOMMY)>> HEY Y'ALL, WELCOME TO DETROIT MUSCLE. WE'RE WORKING ON A GOOD OLE PIECE OF AMERICANA, A CAMARO SS. THE LAST TIME WE HAD THIS THING IN THE SHOP WE ADDRESSED THE BRAKES AND THE SUSPENSION UNDER IT.

(MARC)>> AND TODAY WE'RE GONNA IMPROVE THE APPEARANCE WITH SOME WHEELS AND TIRES AMONG OTHER THINGS. WE'RE GONNA UPGRADE THE EXHAUST AND WHEN IT'S FINISHED THIS THING'S GONNA SING THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER. BUT NOT ONLY THAT, WE'RE GONNA ADD BOOST TO THE TUNE OF ABOUT 600 HORSEPOWER, AND THIS IS WHAT SHE'S GONNA LOOK LIKE WHEN WE'RE DONE. THIS IS THE VALVOLINE GIVEAWAY CAMARO, AND WHEN IT'S ALL SAID AND DONE IT'S GONNA GO HOME WITH ONE OF YOU. WE'VE ALREADY ESTABLISHED THAT THAT CAMARO SS IS NO SLOUCH FROM THE FACTORY WITH ABOUT 450 HORSEPOWER RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE. WE'RE GONNA ADD 150 MORE AND WE'RE GONNA DO THAT WITH EDELBROCK'S EFORCE SUPERCHARGER KIT. THIS IS A NEW AND IMPROVED DESIGN OVER THEIR EXISTING TVS KITS WITH TWO POINT SIXFIVE LITERS OF DISPLACEMENT OVER THE TWO POINT THREE LITER. THAT 15 PERCENT INCREASE IS GONNA MEAN LOWER INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURES AND POTENTIAL FOR MORE POWER OUTPUT.

(TOMMY)>> THE KIT INCLUDES EVERYTHING YOU'RE GONNA NEED TO DO THE SWAP LIKE THE PULLEYS, BRACKETS, HOSES, HARDWARE, YOU NAME IT IT HAS IT. IT ALSO COMES WITH THIS GREAT SET OF INSTRUCTIONS. IT HAS GOOD PHOTOS AND THEY'RE EASY TO READ. PRETTY MUCH ALL YOU'VE GOTTA DO IS FOLLOW ALONG AND WHEN YOU'RE ALL SAID AND DONE YOU'RE GONNA HAVE YOURSELF A RUNNING, DRIVING BOOSTED RIDE.

(MARC)>> LET ME GUESS. FIRST STEP, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY?

(TOMMY)>> LOOKS LIKE WE NEED TO DO THAT AND THEN FOLLOW IT WITH REMOVING THE ECU.

(MARC)>> I'VE GOT IT.

(TOMMY)>> HE'S PRETTY HAPPY.

(MARC)>> WITH A 10 MILLIMETER SOCKET WE'LL DISCONNECT THE BATTERY, WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE TRUNK. THEN WE CAN START WORKING OUR WAY TO THE ECU, WHICH IS LOCATED BELOW THE FUSE BOX IN THE ENGINE BAY.

WITH SOME OF THE WIRING PIGTAILS OUT OF THE WAY WE CAN UNBOLT THE BRACKET THAT'S IN THE WAY AND SET IT ASIDE. THREE HARNESSES UNPLUG FROM THE ECU AND IT GETS REMOVED AND SENT OFF TO BE FLASHED. THE FRONT FASCIA IS NEXT. IT WILL NEED TO BE REMOVED TO INSTALL THE HEAT EXCHANGER.

(MARC)>> WITH THE UPPER SCREWS REMOVED, WE CAN RAISE THE CAR AND START WORKING UNDERNEATH.

THERE ARE SEVERAL SCREWS UNDER HERE THAT NEED TO COME OUT, AND THEN THE FASCIA CAN GET SET ASIDE.

A CATCH PAN CAN BE SLID UNDER AND THE COOLANT DRAINED BECAUSE WE'LL NEED TO DISCONNECT SOME OF THE COOLING HOSES. TEARING INTO THE ENGINE, THESE ENGINE COVERS CAN BE REMOVED. WITH THOSE OUT OF THE WAY WE CAN START UNDOING SOME OF THE PLUMBING LIKE THE PCV HOSES, NOISE TUBE, AND AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY.

A DEEP WELL 10 MILLIMETER SOCKET WILL GET THE FOUR BOLTS OUT THAT HOLD THE INTAKE COVER IN PLACE, AND IT CAN BE REMOVED.

NOW WE CAN GET TO SOME OF THESE OTHER HOSES, LIKE THE ONES FOR THE EVAP SYSTEM AND THIS FUEL LINE, WHICH NEEDS TO BE MOVED SO WE CAN GET THE INTAKE MANIFOLD OUT.

WELL WE'VE GOT OUR INTAKE MANIFOLD UNBOLTED. NOW WE NEED TO GET IT OVER TO THE BENCH BECAUSE WE'RE GOT SOME THINGS WE NEED TO TAKE OFF OF HERE TO PUT ON OUR SUPERCHARGER.

(TOMMY)>> BUT WE'RE NOT QUITE READY TO DROP IT INTO PLACE YET. WE'VE GOT OTHER THINGS THAT NEED TO GO ON FIRST, BUT TO HELP THE PROCESS ALONG I'M GONNA GO AHEAD AND SWAP OVER A FEW OF THESE PIECES. THE FIRST PIECE IS THE THROTTLE BODY. JUST FOUR BOLTS HOLD IT ON AND IT CAN BE INSTALLED ONTO OUR SUPERCHARGER USING THE SUPPLIED BOLTS AND GASKET.

THE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKETS ARE NEXT. WE'RE GONNA REUSE THESE BUT HAVE TO CUT THIS LITTLE TAB OFF OF EACH ONE. THEN THOSE GASKETS GET INSTALLED ONTO OUR HOUSING OF OUR SUPERCHARGER.

THIS EVAP PURGE SOLENOID GETS SWAPPED OVER AND THE IS SUPERCHARGER READY TO GO ON.

(MARC)>> I'M GETTING THESE COIL COVERS OFF BECAUSE WE'VE GOT NEW ONES THAT CAME WITH THE KIT. NOW WHILE YOU WERE OVER THERE WITH TOMMY I WENT AHEAD AND UPGRADED THIS FUEL LINE HERE TO THE ONE THAT CAME WITH THE KIT. IT'S A LITTLE MORE LOW PROFILE, AND I ALSO TRIMMED UP THIS INSULATOR SOME. THAT GIVES A LITTLE MORE ROOM FOR THAT BIG SUPERCHARGER TO SIT DOWN IN THERE. NOW I'M GONNA MOVE ON TO GETTING THAT BELT DRIVE ASSEMBLY ALL DONE AND I NEED TO GET THAT FAN OUT FIRST. WITH SOME OF THE COOLING HOSES OUT OF THE WAY A COUPLE OF BOLTS ARE ALL THAT HOLD THIS FAN INTO PLACE, AND THEN WE CAN REMOVE THE FACTORY DRIVE BELT.

(NARRATOR)>> UP NEXT WE'LL GET THAT BLOWER BUTTONED UP, AND LATER ON TAKE A LOOK AT HOW TO PROTECT THAT UPGRADED ENGINE.

(MARC)>> HEY EVERYBODY, WELCOME BACK. WE GOT A LOT ACCOMPLISHED WHILE YOU WERE GONE, INCLUDING THAT ENTIRE BELT DRIVE SYSTEM WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE SUPERCHARGER ITSELF, WHICH HAS TO GO ON AFTER THE BLOWER GETS INSTALLED. WE ALSO DID ALL THE ROUTING FOR OUR PLUMBING, FOR OUR INTERCOOLER SYSTEM INCLUDING THE HEAT EXCHANGER. SO WE'RE READY TO BOLT ON A SUPERCHARGER.

(TOMMY)>> BUT BEFORE WE DROP IT INTO PLACE WE'RE GONNA UPGRADE SOME OF OUR IGNITION COMPONENTS LIKE OUR PLUGS AND PLUG WIRES. NOW WHAT WE'RE GONNA BE USING IS SOME PRODUCTS FROM ETHREE. BOTH OF THESE ARE PART OF THEIR DIAMOND FIRE LINE. NOW YOU'VE SEEN US INSTALL THEIR PLUGS BEFORE. THEY IMPROVE PERFORMANCE AND EFFICIENCY. NOW AS FOR THE WIRES THESE ARE RELATIVELY NEW. THEY ARE MADE OF EIGHT POINT FIVE MILLIMETER DIAMETER WIRE. THEY CAN WITHSTAND 600 DEGREE PLUS TEMPERATURES, AND YOU CAN GET THESE IN A UNIVERSAL SETUP OR A DIRECT APPLICATION LIKE OURS. EVEN THOUGH THIS LT ONE IS A MODERN DIRECT INJECTION ENGINE IT PUTS ITS SPARK PLUGS ON LIKE THE REST OF US, ONE PLUG AT A TIME.

AND THE SAME GOES FOR THE WIRES.

AND FINALLY THAT SUPERCHARGER CAN GO ON. LOOK AT THAT! A LITTLE DAB OF PERMATEX MEDIUM STRENGTH THREAD LOCKER GOES ON THE BOLTS THAT HOLD THE SUPERCHARGER ON, AND THEY GET TORQUED DOWN IN THE CORRECT SEQUENCE. THEN WE CAN START HOOKING UP THE HOSES AND CLAMPS FOR OUR INTERCOOLER SYSTEM.

WHAT SIZE IS THAT DUDE, DO YOU KNOW?

(MARC)>> 15.

NOW SOME OF THE EVAP AND PCV HOSES CAN GET PLUGGED IN, FOLLOWED BY THE AUXILIARY WIRING HARNESS THAT CAME WITH THE KIT.

AND MORE HOSES, AND MORE WIRING.

LIKE THIS PIGTAIL THAT GOES ALL THE WAY OVER TO THE INTERCOOLER PUMP.

THEN THE AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY CAN GO BACK INTO PLACE ALONG WITH ALL THE HOSES AND CLAMPS THAT GO ALONG WITH IT.

ONE LAST THING WE'RE GONNA ADD HERE TO THE ENGINE'S GOING TO BE THESE COILS THAT WE GOT FROM ETHREE. THE REASON WHY WE JUST GOT THEM IS BECAUSE THEY'RE HOT OFF THE ASSEMBLY LINE. THESE ARE FROM THEIR DIAMOND FIRE LINE AND THEY'RE BUILT TO MEET OR EXCEED OEM SPECS, AND EACH COIL IS DESIGNED AND OPTIMIZED FOR EACH APPLICATION. WE'LL JUST UNPLUG THE ORIGINAL COILS FROM THE HARNESS AND PLUG WIRES, AND UNBOLT THEM FROM THE VALVE COVER. THE NEW COILS JUST BOLT RIGHT INTO THE SAME PLACE AND GET TIGHTENED UP. [ drill spinning ]

(MARC)>> SNAP, SNAP ON THE WIRES AND THEY'RE DONE.

(MARC)>> THESE COIL COVERS THAT CAME FROM EDELBROCK WITH THE KIT GET BOLTED ON, FOLLOWED BY THE LAST OF THE HOSES, THIS PCV HOSE. THEN THE FRONT FASCIA CAN GO BACK INTO PLACE AND GET BOLTED IN LIKE IT WAS NEVER OFF.

ALL RIGHT, WELL WE NEED TO GET SOME COOLANT IN THIS THING, AND WE'RE JUST ABOUT DONE UNDER THE HOOD WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THAT ECM, WHICH IS OUT AT EDELBROCK GETTING FLASHED. SO WE CAN GET THAT THING BACK. WE'LL PUT IT BACK IN, GET THIS FUSE BOX BACK TOGETHER, AND THIS THING WILL BE READY TO RUN. DON'T GO NO WHERE.

(TOMMY)>> HEY GUYS, WE'RE GONNA STOP AND SLOW DOWN JUST A BIT AND TALK ABOUT SOME TOOLS THAT YOU'D BE USING IF YOU WERE GONNA BE WIRING A CAR OR MAKING SOME TYPE OF ELECTRICAL REPAIR. WHAT WE'RE GONNA BE TALKING ABOUT ARE SOLDERING IRONS. NOW THERE'S SEVERAL DIFFERENT TYPE HERE. LET'S START OFF WITH THIS ONE. THIS ONE IS A BUTANE POWERED AND IT'S VERY HANDY IF YOU'RE GONNA BE CRAWLING IN AND OUT OF A CAR BECAUSE IT DOESN'T HAVE A CORD ON IT. YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT YOUR FEET GETTING ALL TANGLED UP. THIS ONE HERE IS PROBABLY THE MOST POPULAR. IT'S A SOLDERING GUN, NOT AN IRON. NOW IT'S ACTIVATED BY PULLING THE TRIGGER. IT MAKES THE TIP WHENEVER YOU PULL IT HEAT UP, BUT ONE OF THE ISSUES WITH IT IS IT GETS STUPID HOT AND IT MAY NOT BE RIGHT FOR THE APPLICATION OR THE REPAIR YOU'RE TRYING TO MAKE. ANOTHER THING WITH THESE GUNS, THE TIP IS RATHER LARGE AND IF YOU'RE TRYING TO MAKE A REPAIR IN AN INTRICATE AREA, WELL THAT MAY END UP GIVING YOU SOME ISSUES. NOW THIS OLD SCHOOL BABY BLUE JEWEL HERE HAS AN ADJUSTABLE DIAL ON IT, WHICH IS PRETTY HANDY, AND IT'S PRETTY SIMPLE. YOU'VE GOT AN ON/OFF SWITCH AND AN INDICATING LIGHT LETTING YOU KNOW IT'S EITHER WARMING UP OR READY TO START WORKING. NOW THIS ECONOMICALLY PRICED IRON HERE IS EXTREMELY SIMPLE. YOU BASICALLY PLUG IT INTO THE WALL AND IT GETS HOT. AS THIS ONE HERE YOU MAY THINK IT'S THE SAME THING BUT TECHNICALLY THIS ONE'S A WOOD BURNER. IT DOES COME WITH A TIP BUT IT GETS CRAZY HOT TOO. NOW YOU CAN HAVE SEVERAL DIFFERENT TIP DESIGNS, KINDA LIKE THIS WEDGE AND THE POINTY ONE HERE. YOU DON'T REALLY WANT TO START GRINDING ON THEM OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT BECAUSE YOU CAN DAMAGE THE TIP. EACH ONE OF THESE HAVE THEIR PURPOSE. HOWEVER, THIS ONE HERE IF YOU NOTICE IT'S A LITTLE BIT WONKY. THAT'S OKAY, WE CAN FIX IT. NOW ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS TAKE A FILE AND KIND OF DRESS IT UP A LITTLE BIT.

WELL SCRATCH THAT. SOMEBODY'S ALREADY GOT ON THIS THING WITH A FILE TOO MUCH. IF YOU NOTICE YOU CAN SEE A COPPER CORE IN IT. YOU DON'T WANT TO GO THAT FAR. THIS ONE'S JUNK! WITH THE COPPER SHOWING THAT MEANS THE PROTECTIVE COATING IS LONG GONE, AND THE COPPER IS GONNA OXIDIZE RATHER QUICKLY, AND YOU CAN RUN INTO HEAT TRANSFER PROBLEMS OR CONTAMINATED JOINTS. WE'RE GONNA MOVE OVER HERE TO THE ADJUSTABLE ONE WE SHOWED YOU GUYS EARLIER. WE'VE HAD IT TURNED ON SO IT CAN WARM UP AND WE CAN GIVE YOU A COUPLE OF TIPS JUST IN CASE YOU WANT TO MAKE A REPAIR LATER. BEFORE YOU GET STARTED YOU WANT TO CLEAN THE TIP, AND TO DO THAT OFTEN TIMES PEOPLE USE A DAMPENED SPONGE. NOW YOU DON'T WANT TOO MUCH WATER IN HERE BECAUSE WHENEVER YOU DIP IT IN THERE WELL YOU'RE GONNA COOL THE TIP DOWN TOO MUCH. SO TO CLEAN THE TIP JUST SIMPLY DRAG IT ACROSS A COUPLE OF TIMES AND YOU'LL BE GOOD TO GO. WITH THE TIP ALL CLEANED UP WE'RE READY TO TIN IT, AND IF YOU'RE GONNA STORE THAT THING FOR A GOOD AMOUNT OF TIME IT'S A GOOD IDEA TO DO THAT. NOW LATER DOWN THE ROAD WE'RE GONNA DIG A LOT DEEPER INTO SOME OF THIS ELECTRICAL REPAIR BUT Y'ALL ARE GONNA HAVE TO WAIT FOR ALL THAT.

GDI'S A GREAT WAY FOR MANUFACTURERS TO LOWER EMISSIONS AND MEET FUEL ECONOMY REQUIREMENTS WHILE ALSO IMPROVING PERFORMANCE, BUT THERE'S A TRADE OFF, AND THERE ARE SOME DRAW BACKS TO GDI. TO TALK ABOUT THEM WE HAVE SCOTT FROM VALVOLINE, WHICH HAS DEVELOPED A NEW PRODUCT SPECIFICALLY FOR THESE ENGINES.

(SCOTT)>> IN NEWER ENGINES MOTOR IS SUBJECTED TO SEVERE OPERATING CONDITIONS LIKE ELEVATED TEMPERATURES, WHICH ACCELERATE THE BREAK DOWN OF MOTOR OIL AND CAUSE CARBON BUILD UP TO OCCUR IN CRITICAL AREAS OF THE ENGINE, PARTICULARLY PISTONS, TURBOCHARGERS, AND INTAKE VALVES. CARBON BUILD UP IS MOST NOTICEABLE ON INTAKE VALVES OF ENGINES WITH DIRECT INJECTION DUE TO THE LACK OF FUEL SPRAY CONTACTING THE VALVES. WE'VE LEARNED THAT CARBON DEPOSITS ON INTAKE VALVES IS THE RESULT OF A COMBINATION OF EXHAUST GASES AND OIL CONTACTING INTAKE VALVES THROUGH THE CRANK CASE VENTILATION SYSTEM AND/OR VALVE SEAL LEAKS. ANOTHER PROBLEM IS LSPI, LOW SPEED PREIGNITION, WHICH IS AN ABNORMAL COMBUSTION EVENT THAT IS MOST COMMON IN NEWER BOOSTED, DIRECT INJECTION ENGINES OPERATING UNDER SEVERE DRIVING CONDITIONS, WHICH CAN RESULT IN CATASTROPHIC DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE.

(SCOTT)>> WELL WE KNEW SINCE NO FUEL IS GOING OVER THE VALVES WE HAD TO INTRODUCE SOMETHING THROUGH THE INDUCTION, THROUGH THE INTAKE. SO WE DEVELOPED A PRODUCT TO CLEAN THROUGH THE INDUCTION, WHICH IT DID. THE PROBLEM IS YOU CLEAN IT UP IT'S GONNA COME RIGHT BACK CAUSE YOU'RE NOT GONNA STOP THE EGR OR THE OIL VAPOR COMING THROUGH, AND THAT'S WHY WE DEVELOPED MODERN ENGINE OIL.

(MARC)>> WHICH BRINGS US TO STEVE, ALSO WITH VALVOLINE, AND HE ACTUALLY WORKED WITH THIS VERY OIL IN THE LAB. WHAT DID YOU GUYS COME UP WITH?

(STEVE)>> WELL VALVOLINE MODERN ENGINE FULL SYNTHETIC WAS FORMULATED TO FIGHT CARBON BUILD UP THROUGH A COMBINATION OF HIGHER QUALITY COMPONENTS AND A STRONGER DETERGENT DISPERSANT SYSTEM.

(MARC)>> AND THEY DO WHAT?

(STEVE)>> WELL HIGHER QUALITY BASE OIL TO PREVENT OIL BREAK DOWN AT HIGH TEMPERATURE, AND THE DETERGENT DISPERSANT SYSTEM KEEPS DEPOSITS SUSPENDED IN THE OIL AND ENGINE COMPONENTS CLEAN. COMPARED TO OLDER ENGINES, MODERN ENGINES HAVE DECREASED EMISSIONS, INCREASED FUEL ECONOMY, AND INCREASED HORSEPOWER. WITH THESE CHANGES COME NEW CHALLENGES. (TOMMY)>> WE WANTED OUR CAMARO TO SING QUITE A SWEET SONG. SO WE WENT TO MAGNAFLOW FOR A CAT BACK EXHAUST. THIS THING'S MADE OUT OF STAINLESS FROM END TO END AND IT'S A CINCH TO INSTALL. SO LET'S GO AHEAD AND GET STARTED. IF YOU REMEMBER LAST TIME, MARC CUT THE BIG MUFFLER OFF THE BACK. SO WE HAVE TO MAKE NEW CUTS IN THE CORRECT LOCATION. SO WITH SOME WD 40 AND OUR TUBING CUTTERS WE'LL GET OUR CUTS MADE IN BOTH THE TUBES.

NOW WE NEED TO UNDO THIS PIGTAIL FROM THIS EXHAUST VALVE MOTOR AND WE'VE GOT TO DO THIS ON BOTH SIDES.

WE'LL REMOVE THESE VALVE ACTUATORS BECAUSE WE NEED TO INSTALL THEM ONTO OUR NEW PIECES.

WITH THAT DONE WE CAN SLIDE OUR NEW PIPE OVER WHERE WE MADE OUR CUTS. A LITTLE WD 40 WILL HELP OUR HANGERS SLIDE ON NICE AND EASY. AND THEN WE CAN PLUG THE HARNESS BACK IN. THE MUFFLERS ARE NEXT, SLIDE RIGHT IN, AND THE CLAMPS CAN BE TIGHTENED.

(MARC)>> WELL I JUST UNBOXED OUR ECU. WE GOT IT BACK FROM EDELBROCK. IT'S BEEN FLASHED WITH THE NEW TUNE FOR OUR SUPERCHARGER. WE JUST NEED TO GET IT INSTALLED, GET THIS WIRING HARNESS ALL PLUGGED BACK IN.

THIS ECU JUST SLIDES INTO THE BRACKET AND SNAPS IN. THEN THE BRACKET THAT HOLDS THE HARNESSES CAN GO BACK IN AND GET CINCHED DOWN, FOLLOWED BY THE HARNESSES THEMSELVES AND THE FUSE BOX.

(TOMMY)>> WELL YOU KNOW WHENEVER WE WENT ON THAT FIRST TEST DRIVE OF THIS SUPER CAMARO, WELL WE KINDA SMOKED UP THEM REAR TIRES. SO I GOT OUR REPLACEMENTS. FOR WHEELS WE DECIDED TO GO TO WHEEL PROS TO GET THESE GREAT LOOKING AMERICAN RACING CROSSFIRES. THEY'RE AVAILABLE IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT COLORS AND WE WENT WITH THE SATIN BLACK. NOW UP FRONT WE'RE GONNA BE RUNNING A 20 BY NINE AND OUT BACK A 10.5. FOR RUBBER WE WENT TO GENERAL AND GOT A SET OF THEIR GMAX RS TIRES. THIS IS THEIR SUMMER PERFORMANCE SETUP AND IT'LL GIVE YOU GOOD TRACTION AND HANDLING WHETHER IT'S WET OR DRY CONDITIONS. NOW WE'VE ALL SEEN THE MANUFACTURERS OUT THERE. THEY GIVE YOU THIS LITTLE NUB TO LET YOU KNOW WHENEVER THE TIRE'S GETTING A LITTLE LONG IN THE TOOTH AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED, BUT THEY WENT A LITTLE STEP FURTHER THAN THAT. RIGHT THROUGH HERE, WHENEVER THE TIRE GETS WARN IT'LL ACTUALLY SAY REPLACE TIRE, WHICH IS A PRETTY NEAT SETUP.

THERE IT IS, THE VALVOLINE CAMARO! JUST LIKE IT LOOKED IN THE RENDERING. HOW ABOUT THAT?
