(JOE)>> WELCOME TO HORSEPOWER AND THE FINALE OF OUR HYBRID LS PROJECT FOR A '69 CAMARO. WITH HELP FROM ATK PERFORMANCE WE STARTED WITH A BORED AND STROKED 408 BLOCK. FILLED IT WITH A CUSTOM GRIND BILLET CAM, FORGED PISTONS, AND HBEAM RODS. WE USED A FRONT COVER DESIGNED TO ACCEPT A SMALL BLOCK FORD DISTRIBUTOR, DROPPED ON A SET OF ALUMINUM PERFORMANCE HEADS, AND AFTER THE REST OF THE VALVE TRAIN WE GAVE IT A SINGLE PLANE INTAKE MANIFOLD AND 950 CFM CARB. FINALLY A DYNO TEST WHERE IT PRODUCED A VERY RESPECTABLE 569 HORSEPOWER. TODAY'S GAME PLAN IS THIS, DROP OUR NEWLY BUILT 408 LS INTO THE ENGINE BAY OF THAT CAMARO, BACK IT WITH AN AMERICAN POWERTRAIN MAGNUM SIX SPEED, MAKE IT ALL FIT WITH A HOLLEY SWAP KIT, ADD SOME MORE PARTS, AND STILL MAKE IT TO A SPECIAL EVENT IN TIME TO TAKE THAT THING DOWN THE STRIP.

(MIKE)>> THE ONLY MAJOR PARTS CHANGE NEEDED FOR THE SWAP IS THE OIL PAN. THE FACTORY PAN HAS TO BE REPLACED, AND HERE'S WHY. THE STOCK PAN IS ABOUT TWO INCHES DEEPER. SO THE NEW PAINT IS GONNA GIVE US THE EXTRA CLEARANCE WE NEED FOR THE REAR STEERING COMPONENTS. SOMETHING ELSE THAT'S COOL, THE NEW PAN DOESN'T HAVE ALL THESE INDENTIONS. SO THERE'S NO EXTRA CLEARANCING WE HAVE TO DO TO IT. A SHALLOWER PAN MEANS A SHORTER PICK UP, AND THIS ONE CAME IN THE KIT. THE SWAP KIT COMES WITH SPECIAL PLATES THAT FIRST MOUNT TO THE BLOCK. THEN THREE BOLT ENERGY SUSPENSION MOUNTS WITH URETHANE BUSHINGS WILL ATTACH TO THE FACTORY MOUNTS. THAT'S ALL THE ENGINE BLOCK PREP NEEDED TO GET THIS LS ON THE CHAIN AND START LOWERING IT INTO THE ENGINE BAY.

(MATT)>> NOW ABOUT TWO INCHES BACK, RIGHT THERE.

(MIKE)>> BY THE WAY, THAT'S MATT GRAVES FROM AMERICAN POWERTRAIN WHO NOT ONLY BROUGHT PARTS, BUT WE ALSO RECRUITED HIM TO HELP OUT. THE NEW BLOCK MOUNTS SHOULD FIT RIGHT OVER THE STOCK FRAME MOUNTS. NOTICE HOW I SAID SHOULD! APPARENTLY SOME TIME AGO THE CAR'S FRAME MOUNTS WERE ALTERED FOR ANOTHER ENGINE SWAP. SO TIME FOR PLAN B, AND THAT'S TO MAKE OUR OWN FRAME MOUNTS THAT WILL FIT THE NEW HOLLEY PLATES. FIRST WE MARK AND PLASMA CUT TWO FLAT PIECES AND DRILL MOUNTING HOLES IN EACH ONE. NEXT WE BOLT THEM IN PLACE USING EXISTING HOLES. ATTACH A COUPLE OF TABS TO EACH NEW MOUNT ON THE ENGINE, AND ONCE WE GET THEM CENTERED ON THE PLATE. 14 AND A 16TH IS DEAD NUTS! WE CAN TACK WELD THE TABS TO THE PLATES. THEN FULLY WELD THEM IN AND GIVE THEM A COAT OF PAINT BEFORE PERMANENT BOLT IN.

(JOE)>> IN ADDITION TO THE TRIMMING, MATT'S COMPANY FURNISHED A TRICK CROSS MEMBER, HYDRAULIC CONVERSION KIT, CLUTCH KIT, SHIFTER, PEDALS, EVERYTHING WE NEED TO CONVERT THE CAMARO FROM AUTOMATIC TO MANUAL SIX SPEED.

(MATT)>> FUEL ECONOMY BEING SO IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE WITH GAS AT THREE OR FOUR DOLLARS A GALLON. IT'S VERY IMPORTANT TO HAVE AN OVERDRIVE. NOT ONLY THAT BUT THE PERFORMANCE OF THE MODERN TRANSMISSION IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE OLD AUTOMATIC OR A FOUR SPEED.

(JOE)>> AMERICAN POWERTRAIN ALSO PROVIDED THIS STEEL FLYWHEEL WE'RE SECURING TO THE ENGINE WITH ARP BOLTS TORQUED TO 75 FOOT POUNDS. NEXT A DAB OF GREASE ON THE BEARING BEFORE INSTALLING THE CLUTCH DISC AND PLATE TOGETHER USING AN INSTALLATION TOOL. THE BELL HOUSING BOLTS UP NEXT AND AFTER THAT TIME TO MAKE SOME MEASUREMENTS. YOU SEE WE NEED TO KNOW THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE BELL HOUSING FACE AND THE CLUTCH FINGERS, AND RECORD THAT NUMBER. NOW MEASURE BETWEEN THE BASE OF THE HRB AND THE TRANS FACE WHERE IT TOUCHES THE BELL HOUSING. THOSE TWO MEASUREMENTS ARE USED WITH A FORMULA TO DETERMINE HOW MANY SHIMS YOU USE BETWEEN THE BEARING AND THE CLUTCH FINGERS. WELL NOW THE HRB GOES BACK ON THE INPUT SHAFT AND STUD PERMANENTLY THIS TIME. BEFORE BOLTING UP THE TRANS, THE EXISTING CROSS MEMBER HAS GOT TO GO.

(MIKE)>> NOW WE CAN RAISE THE TRANNY, MANEUVER IT INTO PLACE. BUMP IT REAL HARD, GIVE IT ALL YOU GOT. AND BOLT IT UP. BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE, WE NEED TO MEASURE FOR THE DRIVE SHAFT AND GET OUR ORDER IN. THEN THE NEW CROSS MEMBER, WHICH IS DESIGNED FOR FIRST GEN CAMARO SIX SPEED CONVERSIONS. NOW THE CAR BACK DOWN ON THE GROUND, WE GET RID OF THIS CENTER CONSOLE AND MAKE WAY TO GET THE SHIFTER OUT OF HERE. NOW ONCE THAT'S OUT OF THE WAY, WE'RE GONNA GO AHEAD AND CUT A HOLE IN THE FLOOR FOR THE SIX SPEED SHIFTER TO POKE THROUGH. THAT'LL ALSO ALLOW US TO LIFT THE TRANSMISSION UP AND GET THE MOUNT BETWEEN IT AND THE CROSS MEMBER. NOW THE SHIFTER ENDED UP BEING IN THE PERFECT SPOT AND THAT LONG HANDLE GIVES YOU THAT NOSTALGIC FEEL BUT WITH SUPER SHORT SHIFTS. CAN'T BEAT THAT!

(JOE)>> HOW'S THAT NEW SHIFTER FEEL JOHN?

(JOHN)>> MAN THAT THING'S GONNA BE NICE ON THE DRAG STRIP.

(JOE)>> WELCOME BACK TO HORSEPOWER AND OUR LS POWERED FIRST GEN CAMARO. WELL TIME NOW FOR A CRITICAL COMPONENT IN OUR SIX SPEED CONVERSION, THIS CLUTCH AND PEDAL SETUP WE GOT FROM AMERICAN POWER TRAIN. IT BOLTS UP PRETTY MUCH IN THE FACTORY PEDAL LOCATION. OVER ON THE FIREWALL WE'RE INSTALLING THE WILWOOD SLAVE CYLINDER SO THE PUSH ROD CAN CONNECT WITH THE CLUTCH PEDAL. A RESERVOIR MOUNTS JUST ABOVE IT FEEDING THE CYLINDER WITH A PIECE OF RUBBER HOSE. A BRAIDED HOSE ATTACHED TO THE BOTTOM AND CONNECTS TO THE TRANSMISSION. WITH THAT WE CAN MOVE ON TO INSTALLING OUR LONG TUBE HEADERS, WHICH GO ON WITH PLENTY OF CLEARANCE ON EACH SIDE OF THE ENGINE.

(MIKE)>> NEXT UP IS OUR FRONT DRIVE. NOW THIS STUFF CAME FROM JONES RACING PRODUCTS AND IT'S GOT TO BE SOME OF THE NICEST STUFF WE'VE SEEN COME THROUGH HERE IN A WHILE. NOW IT COMES WITH A MINI 140 AMP ALTERNATOR WITH ALL THE BRACKETS AND SPACERS TO INSTALL IT, A TWO STAGE BILLET ALUMINUM GEAR STYLE VACUUM PUMP. NOW THIS THING TURNS AT HALF THE SPEED OF THE ENGINE AND THIS LITTLE VALVE RIGHT HERE REGULATES IT TO ONLY PULL 12 INCHES OF VACUUM. NOW IT COMES WITH ALL THE BUNGS TO WELD INTO THE VALVE COVERS, FITTINGS, AND LINES TO PLUMB IT. NOW TO CATCH THE EXCESS OIL THE VACUUM PUMP PULLS, THIS FABRICATED ALUMINUM CATCH TANK. AND TO COOL OUR 408 WE'VE GOT THIS TRICK LS STYLE WATER PUMP. NOW IT HAS A BOLT ON RADIUS COG STYLE PULLEY, AND THEY EVEN PUT OUR HORSEPOWER LOGO IN THE FRONT OF IT. NOW TO SPACE IT FOR THAT WIDE TIMING COVER AND DISTRIBUTOR, WE'RE GONNA USE THESE BILLET SPACERS. AND TO TURN ALL OF OUR ACCESSORIES OFF THE FRONT OF THE CRANK A TWO BELT MANDREL. WE INSTALL THE GASKETS, SPACERS, AND WATER PUMP FIRST. THEN BOLT THE DRIVE HUB ONTO THE BALANCER, FOLLOWED BY A COUPLE OF SPACERS. THEN A BELT GUIDE, A PULLEY, WELL YOU GET THE DRIFT. AND AT THE END WE'LL SECURE EVERYTHING WITH A BIG GRADE EIGHT BOLT. NEXT THE VACUUM PUMP CAN GO ON WITH THE SUPPLIED BRACKET, FOLLOWED BY THE ALTERNATOR. NOW I'M GONNA GO AHEAD AND RUN A HOSE FROM THE DRIVER'S SIDE VALVE COVER FITTING TO THE INPUT FITTING ON THE VACUUM PUMP. USING A SPACER, THE EXPANSION TANK BOLTS UP TO THE PASSENGER SIDE CYLINDER HEAD. THEN WE CAN RUN ANOTHER HOSE FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE VACUUM PUMP TO THE CAN. THE FINAL HOSE IN THE LOOP GOES FROM THE SECOND STAGE OF THE VACUUM PUMP TO THE REAR FITTING ON THE PASSENGER SIDE VALVE COVER. HERE'S HOW THE VACUUM PUMP WORKS. YOU HAVE TWO DASH 12 HOSES COMING OUT OF THE TOP THAT GO TO THE VALVE COVERS. THOSE HOSES ARE ALWAYS PULLING CRANK CASE PRESSURE OUT OF THE ENGINE. OUT OF THE BOTTOM OF THE PUMP YOU HAVE ANOTHER DASH 12 HOSE THAT RUNS TO THIS CATCH TANK THAT'S VENTED TO THE ATMOSPHERE. COMING OUT OF THE TANK YOU ANOTHER LINE THAT RUNS TO OUR CHECK VALVE. AS THE MOTOR REACHES A LITTLE OVER 12 INCHES OF VACUUM, THAT VALVE STARTS TO OPEN AND SUCKS FRESH AIR INTO THE ENGINE TO KEEP IT REGULATED. THE LAST STEPS, INSTALL BELTS FOR THE VACUUM PUMP, WATER PUMP, AND THE ALTERNATOR.

(JOHN)>> NOW THE ORIGINAL GAS TANK'S BEEN OUT OF THE CAMARO FOR QUITE SOME TIME. WE'RE GONNA GIVE IT A NEW ONE FROM RICK'S HOT ROD SHOP. NOW IT'S A STAINLESS PIECE THAT'S BEEN ALL TIG WELDED TOGETHER. ALL OUR BUNGS ARE INSTALLED. ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS ADD SOME FITTINGS AND LINES AND GET IT IN THE CAR. OKAY, READY JOE? IT'S ABOUT MAXED OUT, YOU READY?

(JOE)>> GOING STRONG?

(JOHN)>> YEP, INSTALLING THE TANK IN THE STOCK LOCATION IS EASY, BUT DEFINITELY A TWO MAN JOB.

(JOE)>> THAT'S WHAT I CALL USING YOUR HEAD JOHN.

FOR FUEL DELIVERY THE TANK HAS FITTINGS FOR A VENT, TURN LINE, AND OF COURSE THIS IS THE FEED LINE. FROM IT WE'VE PLUMBED EARL'S LINE TO THIS 100 MICRON HOLLEY PREFILTER, THE FUEL PUMP, AND ANOTHER 10 MICRON AFT FILTER.

(MIKE)>> FOR EXHAUST WE'RE INSTALLING THE SAME FLOWMASTER SYSTEM WE USED WHEN WE DYNOED THE ENGINE. THEN TO CRANK UP THE CAMARO'S LS A STARTER FROM TCI. AND FINALLY A CUSTOM MADE DRIVESHAFT WE HAD BUILT BY HUDLOW AXLE. WITH THAT, OUR WORK UNDER THE CAR IS A DONE DEAL.

(JOE)>> WELL GUESS WHAT? WE'RE JUST MOMENTS AWAY FROM FINISHING AND FIRING UP THIS LS POWERED FIRST GEN CAMARO. THE LAST LINK IN OUR FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM IS THIS BYPASS STYLE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR MADE FOR CARBURETED ENGINES WITH A RETURN LINE. THIS LINE GOES TO FEED OUR 950 CFM HOLLEY CARB THAT WE USE DURING THE DYNO RUNS.

(MIKE)>> TO COOL OUR CAMARO WE'RE USING THIS ALUMINUM RADIATOR FROM PERFORMANCE ROD AND CUSTOM. NOW WE CUSTOM ORDERED IT WITH INLETS AND OUTLETS ON THE SAME SIDE AS WELL AS A BUNG FOR THE STEAM VENT FROM THE CYLINDER HEAD AND ONE FOR A TEMPERATURE SENSOR. NOW TWIN 14 INCH FANS PULL AIR ACROSS THE FACE, AND THIS BIG SHROUD HERE ALLOWS EVEN COOLING ALL THE WAY ACROSS. NOW THIS RADIATOR IS FULLY 100 PERCENT ALUMINUM CONSTRUCTED WITH NO EPOXIES. IT'S ALSO BEEN PRESSURED TESTED BEFORE IT LEAVES THEIR BUILDING. THE COOLEST THING I LIKE ABOUT IT, IT'S A DIRECT DROP IN FOR THE '69.

(JOE)>> OVER AND DOWN.

(MIKE)>> THEN AFTER INSTALLING IT AND PLUMBING IT, WE CAN INSTALL AN OPTIMA RED TOP BATTERY ON A PLATE JUST BEHIND AN EXISTING DISCONNECT SWITCH. THEN ROYAL PURPLE FIVE W-30 MOTOR OIL, MAXX ATF TRANNY FLUID, AND MAXX GEAR OIL FOR THE REAR END. NEXT NEW ROLLERS FOR THE CAR FROM NITTO. 245/45 17'S UP FRONT, 295/45 18'S OUT BACK, ALL WRAPPED AROUND A GREAT LOOKING SET OF POLISHED WELD RACING FORGED ALUMINUM WHEELS. SINCE ANTIFREEZE IS A TABOO AT MOST TRACKS, WE'RE FILLING THE COOLING SYSTEM WITH DEIONIZED WATER, WHICH WILL ALSO HELP PREVENT CORROSION. LETS SEE WHAT SHE'S GOT.

(JOHN)>> ALRIGHT. [ engine fires ] NICE!

(MIKE)>> BESIDES THE ENGINE MOUNTS, THIS TRANSPLANT WAS THE SMOOTHEST WE'VE HAD IN A LONG TIME.

(JOHN)>> 180.

(MIKE)>> THEY'RE ON. WHAT A GREAT ADDITION TO A CLASSY CAR.

(JOE)>> WELL FORGET ABOUT DYNO TESTING THIS TIME. WE'VE TAKEN THE CAMARO UP THE ROAD TO THE LS FEST AT BEECH BEND RACEWAY. YEAH, WE WANT TO SEE WHAT THIS CAR CAN DO ON THE QUARTER MILE STRIP.

WELL THIS IS NO SURPRISE. PLANTING ALL THAT POWER TO STREET TIRES IS A MAJOR CHORE, BUT THINGS GOT BETTER AT THE BOTTOM HALF OF THE TRACK. FIRST PASS, A 12.07 AT 122 MILES AN HOUR. DESPITE THE HASSLES OF TRYING TO HOOK THIS THING UP, CONSECUTIVE RUNS IN THE LOW 12'S IS NOT TOO SHABBY.

(MIKE)>> OH YEAH, WITH A SIX SPEED, PRETTY CONSISTENT. MILE AN HOUR'S WITHIN WHAT, ONE MILE AN HOUR? ( )>> WE PICKED IT UP RIGHT THERE. IT DROPPED FIVE NUMBERS THERE.

(MIKE)>> THAT THING'S ROLLING. ( )>> IT IS.

(JOE)>> THEN ON THE THIRD AND FINAL RUN OUR OVER POWERED CAMARO BROKE INTO THE 11'S.

(MIKE)>> NICE! ( )>> OH I LOVE IT, I LOVE IT!

(MIKE)>> WE BUILT THIS CAR IN FOUR DAYS AT THE SHOP AND A PRETTY GOOD THRASH. WE BROUGHT IT TO THE LS FEST WITHOUT EVEN A SHAKEDOWN, RAN IT OUT THE BACK DOOR OF THE QUARTER MILE AT 123 MILES AN HOUR. NOT BAD FOR A PAYOFF.

(JOE)>> HEY, WELCOME BACK TO HORSEPOWER. WHEN A DELIVERY TRUCK PULLS UP TO THE POWERBLOCK TECH CENTER, IT OFTEN MEANS WE'RE GETTING SOME NEW HIGH PERFORMANCE PARTS FOR A PROJECT. THIS TIME THOUGH IT'S A BIG PACKAGE FOR A BIG NECESSITY. YOU CAN'T WORK ON AUTOMOTIVE PROJECTS WITH OUT TOOLS, AND TOOLS NEED A PROPER HOME. IT ALL STARTED WITH A VISIT TO MATCO'S WEBSITE WHERE YOU CAN DESIGN YOUR OWN TOOL BOX TO MEET YOUR PRICE, STORAGE, AND COLOR CONSIDERATIONS. YEAH THAT'S IT, BLACK WITH RED TRIM. TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT WE MADE A TRIP TO A MATCO PLANT UP IN JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK. AND OF COURSE THIS IS WHERE WE GET TO SEE OUR CUSTOM TOOL BOX BEING MADE FROM START TO FINISH. LETS GO ON IN AND SEE HOW IT WORKS.

THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS BEGINS WITH 4,000 STEEL ROWS AND THREE DIFFERENT GAUGES. THE STEEL COMES WITH AN AUTOMOTIVE FINISH FOR A BETTER GLOSS, AND THIS MACHINE'S CALLED A COIL SHEAR. IT'S USED TO CUT THE DIFFERENT WIDTHS FOR DRAWER BODIES. IN A WAY THOUGH THE PROCESS STARTED WITH OUR ORDER.

(TONY)>> ALL OF OUR BOXES ARE BUILT CUSTOM. WE DON'T STOCK BOXES. WHEN YOU CALL FOR A BOX, THEN WE'RE BUILDING YOUR BOX.

(JOE)>> DAVE BARBER'S WORKED HERE FOR 16 YEARS. HE'S ONE OF THE PLANT'S FLOOR LEADERS.

(DAVE)>> WE'RE REAL PROUD OF WHAT WE DO. THERE'S A LOT OF CRAFTSMANSHIP OUT THERE.

(JOE)>> IN A WAY A MATCO TOOL BOX COMES TOGETHER IN TWO SEPARATE ASSEMBLY PROCESSES. ONE FOR THE DOUBLE WALLED REINFORCED CASES, ANOTHER FOR THE FULL INTEGRATED DRAWERS AND SLIDES. HERE STEEL SHEETS ARE PUNCHED FOR BINS IN THE DRAWERS. IN THIS CELL THEY HANDLE A SERIES OF BINS AND EACH PIECE STARTS LOOKING LIKE A DRAWER. NEXT THEY SEND THEM THROUGH THREE SEPARATE SPOT WELDING STATIONS. CATHY HERE'S OPERATING AN EMANDA TURRET PUNCH PRESS. IT'S A CNC CONTROLLED HIGH SPEED SYSTEM FOR THE LARGER STRUCTURAL SECTIONS. ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROOM IN THE CASE CELL FABRICATION IS UNDER WAY ON THREE TABLES.

(TONY)>> WE'RE PROUD TO SAY THAT WE HAVE THE BEST BUILT BOX. IT STARTS ALL THE WAY WITH HOW WE DESIGN THE BOXES. SO WE HAVE A UNIBODY CONSTRUCTION ON THE BOX. IT'S DOUBLE WALL CONSTRUCTION, SO YOU GET THAT EXTRA RIGID CHARACTERISTIC OF THE CASE ITSELF.

(JOE)>> ALL SURFACES GET A THOROUGH SANDING TO INSURE A GOOD PAINT FINISH. MEANWHILE THE MAIN DRAWER HAS ITS OWN SPECIAL CELL. NOW THIS IS WHERE THE BACK SUPPORT IS ADDED SO THE DRAWER WON'T NEED A DIVIDER.

(KYLE)>> WE LISTENED TO THE CUSTOMERS AND WE REALIZED THAT WE HAD TO MAKE THE DRAWERS A LITTLE BIT MORE STABLE. SO WHAT WE DID IS REMOVED THE DIVIDER THAT WENT THE LENGTH OF THE DRAWER AND ADDED TWO MORE BRACES IN THE BOTTOM. IT ACTUALLY STRENGTHENED UP THE DRAWER QUITE A BIT.

(JOE)>> AND ALL THE COMPONENTS TAKE A RIDE THAT INCLUDES 15 STAGES OF COATING, SEALING, AND POWDER COATING TO MAKE SURE THE END PRODUCT HAS THE BEST POSSIBLE FINISH. BY THE WAY MATCO HAS A UNIQUE APPROACH TO QUALITY CONTROL. YOU SEE EVERY EMPLOYEE IS PART OF IT.

(TONY)>> SO EVERY OPERATOR ON THE LINE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR CHECKING THE WORK OF THE STATION BEFORE THEM.

(JOE)>> FINALLY IT ALL COMES TOGETHER IN THE ASSEMBLY CELL, INCLUDING THE RUGGED COMPOSITE CASTORS, THE UL CERTIFIED LOCKING SYSTEM, AND SO FORTH. AFTER ONE MORE THOROUGH INSPECTION, THE BOX IS READY FOR THE TRIP TO ITS FINAL DESTINATION. A PLACE WHERE THE BOX BEGINS A LONG LIFE OF INDISPENSIBLE USE.

(TONY)>> IF YOU DON'T HAVE THOSE TOOLS, THEN YOU DON'T HAVE YOUR LIVELIHOOD. SO WHAT WE BRING TO THE TABLE IS A REALLY SECURED HIGH QUALITY DURABLE PRODUCT FOR OUR TECHNICIANS TO USE TO STORE THEIR LIVELIHOOD.

(MIKE)>> THAT IS ONE SLICK BOX.

(JOE)>> YES IT IS.

(JOHN)>> WHEN YOU TEAR AN ENGINE DOWN TO CLEAN ALL THE GREASE AND SLUDGE OFF OF THE INTERNAL PARTS, EXPOSURE TO AIR CAN SET YOU UP FOR IMMEDIATE RUST. IT'S A MYTH MOTOR OIL WILL PREVENT RUST. A COAT OF OIL CAN ACTUALLY TRAP MOISTURE TO NEWLY CLEANED PARTS RESULTING IN SURFACE RUST. THE BEST WAY TO KEEP RUST FROM FORMING ON CLEAN IRON AND STEEL PARTS IS TO APPLY A LIBERAL COAT OF WD 40 MULTIUSE PRODUCT. BY THE WAY, WD ACTUALLY STANDS FOR WATER DISPLACEMENT, WHICH MEANS IT ELIMINATES MOISTURE INSTEAD OF JUST COVERING IT UP. AND BE SURE TO COAT INTERNAL SURFACES LIKE OIL GALLEYS IN THE BLOCK AND OIL FEED HOLES IN THE CRANK. MECHANICS USE IT FOR PENETRATING RUSTED HARDWARE AND LUBRICATING PARTS. BUT WHEN IT COMES TO PREVENTING RUST ON FRESHLY MACHINED SURFACES, THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE.
