The NIO EP9 Sets The New Production Lap Record

Well, it didn’t take long at all to break the production Nurburgring lap record previously held by the Lamborghini Huracan Performante. Only took 2 months. The Chinese start-up company NIO has claimed that the electric hybrid EP9 ran a lap in 6.45 seconds. That beats the Italian supercar’s time by 6 seconds, according to MotorTrend.

If that is indeed their lap time, the EP9 also beats out impressive cars like the Porsche 918 and Radical SR8LM. Which is a pretty big deal, especially for an electric car. The EP9 isn’t new to setting records on the Nurburgring. Just last year it set a record for electric vehicles with a time of 7:05 AND NIO managed that record without a driver in the car. And although these numbers are impressive, there’s a lot of variables that are unknown right now. Official facts like interior equipment, tire type, and driver weren’t given by NIO at the initial time of the record, but it has now been released that driver Peter Dumbreck was behind the wheel this time.

And since only six EP9’s have been made it’s not technically a mainstream production car. But still, an EV with 1,243 horsepower that can hit 0-62 in 2.62 at 195 mph is pretty impressive. And now it has a new record to add to its achievements.
