Tanker Smashes Into Historic Mansion

Ouch.

There’s a certain risk you take when building property right on the riverfront. But whoever built this 200-year-old mansion in Istanbul probably didn’t envision tankers like this being so close.

The tanker is the Vitaspirit, a 225-meter ship. It was sailing from Saudi Arabia to Russia when it lost control of its rudder while navigating the busy Bosphorus straight. It crashed into the 200-year-old Hekimbaşı Salih Efendi mansion. The house is now used for weddings and events, although probably not anywhere in the near future.

No injuries or fatalities were reported even though The Hurriyet Daily News reports that the Bosphorus is one of the busiest waterways in the world, and safety is a constant concern.
