Lots of kids fantasize about being a race car driver. But in the official Gran Turismo trailer, that dream becomes a very fast and loud reality. Following the massive success of cinematic adaptations for popular video games like The Super Mario Bros. movie and the HBO series, The Last of Us, Gran Turismo is based on the popular racing franchise that follows the real-life journey of Jann Mardenborough who went from hardcore gamer and GT Academy winner to professional race car driver.

Jann’s story is a perfect reflection of the phrase, “The truth is stranger than fiction”, and the Gran Turismo trailer is well aware of it. The film is certainly aware of how odd it is for a top-notch racing team to draft “couch-surfing nerds” and transform them into elite drivers, and who doesn’t love a real-life Cinderella story?

The film stars David Harbour (Stranger Things) as the team’s pessimistic coach who is largely skeptical over the very idea of bringing “scrawny, little gamer kids” into their ranks, Orlando Bloom (Pirates of the Carribean) as the racing marketing executive behind the recruitment tactic, and Archie Madekwe (See) as Jann Mardenborough whose dreams of racing cars finally come true, but must face a multitude of challenges along the way like intense G-forces inside a car, his own physical and mental limits, rival racers, and the constant presence of danger on the track. As Harbour’s character states in the film’s trailer, “If you miss a line on the game you reset. If you miss a line on the track you die.”

The film is directed by Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium, Chappie) and will arrive in theaters on August 11th, 2023.
