How Washington Could Actually Be The First State To Ban Gas-Powered Vehicles

California made the news last year after officially banning the sale of gas-powered cars by 2035. Massachusetts soon followed suit. However, Washington state may actually beat them to the punch.

Washington recently passed a bill banning the sale of new gas-powered cars in the state starting 2030. Any vehicle model year 2030 or newer will be illegal, as will importing any new gas-powered car sold in other state.

However, Reuters reports the bill is not a firm mandate since its contingent on Washington adopting a tax on vehicle miles traveled which would help pay for new transportation infrastructure. Road usage fees would also go into affect to replace or supplement a gas tax in order to help pay for roads.

So although it’s in the home stretch after passing state legislature, it has yet to be signed by Democratic Governor Jay Inslee and become an official law. Check back for updates.
