It was only a matter of time before Tesla had its first major recall. And that time has come. Around 135,000 Tesla vehicles are being recalled due to a touchscreen malfunction.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reported that the malfunctioning touchscreens cause an issue in the defrosters and back up cameras in some 2012 through 2018 Model S and 2016 through 2018 Model X vehicles. This recall is different from other Tesla tech issues such as software updated due to the loss of safety-related features.

Typically, Tesla can resolve issues with a software update however, this time, the NHTSA is requiring that the vehicles be repaired in another way. And although it is standing by its statement saying this is not a safety issue, the automaker has agreed to replace the computer processor. Tesla is required to notify owners with the malfunctioning touchscreens starting March 30.

It has been stated that there have been no crashes related to the issue and that cars could still be safely operated without the screen. You can check if your vehicle is affected by the recall using this NHTSA tool.
