Mazda Is Saying So Long To Spark Plugs

If a Mazda is in your future…be prepared. Starting with the next-generation SkyActiv engines, there will be NO spark plugs at all. They’ll be replaced by compression ignition, according to Road and Track.

Its official name is “Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition” and it’s a technology that promises to deliver diesel-like fuel economy from gas engines. And although HCCI isn’t a new concept, it’s mainly been used in experimental concepts and Mazda will be the first automaker to use it in production cars. It supposedly will improve gas mileage by 30% while reducing emissions, too. You can expect to see the new engine design in the 2018 Mazda3….what do you think?
