UPDATE: Illinois Has Decided On $248 EV Registration Instead Of $1,000
It was proposed last month that Illinois would hike its annual registration fee for electric vehicles, from $17.50 to $1,000. However, the Chicago Tribune is reporting that EV owners will instead pay $248 for registration each year.
Although it’s substantially lower than the original proposed amount, it’s still $147 more than gas-powered car owners pay annually. The registration fee increase will take effect in July when gas taxes will climb to 38 cents per gallon. The state already is home to some of the highest gas taxes sitting at the ninth most severe taxer of fuel.
