How To Restore A Steering Column

A piece that often gets overlooked during a restoration is the steering column. The column from Detroit Muscle’s Charger, for example, was making a hissing noise and started smoking which can be a sign of bad wiring.

To get started, you’ll need to disassemble it. Take off the steering wheel, hub, adapter, and cover. Slide out the turn signal assembly and pop out the snap ring before tapping out the shaft. Next, remove the upper and lower bearings.

While it’s taken apart you can clean it up and buy any replacement parts you need before reassembly.
