Could This Be The Vehicle That Replaces The Humvee?
It’s called the L-ATV which doesn’t sound super exciting, but this vehicle is a monster. Design on original humvees started in the late 1970s, with the Jeep-like vehicles first delivered in the mid-1980s. It’s a multi-purpose vehicle ranging from ambulance to artillery pack mule. But yesterday, the Army announced the contract for the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle program: Oshkosh’s Light Combat Tactical All-Terrain Vehicle, or L-ATV. The L-ATV is almost three times the weight of the original Humvee design. In the initial contract, Oshkosh will build 17,000 of the L-ATV over the next few years, with 5,500 of those going to the Marine Corps.
