An Unusual Side Effect Of The Pandemic: Speeding?

Before you ask, no this is not another article about the medical side effects of the coronavirus pandemic. However, the pandemic is causing less traffic and congestion and that’s leading to more 100+ mph speeding tickets and traffic deaths nationwide.

The most recent example of this is in Four Oaks, North Carolina. A man driving an Audi RS7 is facing charges after speeding through on work zone on I-95. The state trooper initially tried to stop Ayaz Naeem Ansari. He then sped up to 187 mph, nearly triple the 65mph speed limit.

This is not an isolated incident. Since the pandemic began, this has been happening throughout the country. The Iowa State Patrol saw a 101% increase in speeding tickets over 100 mph. The California Highway Patrol saw a similar sized 100% increase in tickets over 100 mph totaling more than 15,000 tickets this year. In Ohio, there has been a 61% increase in 100+ mph speeding tickets. The problem isn’t just speeding tickets. Ohio saw 154 traffic fatalities in July. The highest on record since 2007.

It’s clear that drivers are speeding with less traffic on the road. Are you seeing this in your area? Let us know in the comments!
