In line with the Daytona 500 this past weekend, this video has been making its way around the internet. Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his dad should have had several more years together on the track, but with the Dale Sr.’s passing, the family was split before the king had an opportunity to pass his crown to Jr. What a lot of fans probably don’t realize is that years before his driving debut, Junior was there for a lot of the time his dad was in the limelight.

Years later, Junior was in the cockpit, staring at the legend of his dad and knowing what it would take to earn his own way in the sport. When Senior was killed in a crash at Daytona in 2001, Junior suddenly had the spotlight to himself. He skyrocketed to fame and he’s taken full advantage of that opportunity as one of the most popular drivers in all of motorsports.
