BMW Driver Stuck Barreling Down Interstate At 100 mph With Stuck Gas Pedal

This is the stuff nightmares are made of. Going fast is all fun and games until you aren’t able to stop.

Joseph Cooper had this happen when his runaway BMW SUV tore down a Florida interstate for almost 40 miles. Luckily, the driver managed to stay calm and call 911 while authorities made several attempts to stop him. He was on I-95 near Vero Beach when he lost control and called for help. The dispatch and authorities were able to help control traffic as he barreled down the interstate at 95 mph with flashers and a green strobe on.

According to a statement from a BMW spokesperson, the whole situation was “implausible” and said there were several ways the driver could have stopped the car however they said, “We would be happy to work with the Florida State Police to investigate the cause of this incident”.

When dispatch asked if he was able to shift to neutral, he said “I can’t, ma’am, I tried that already. I’m trying to hold onto the wheel and talk to you at the same time.”

Highway Patrol responded to the call but said when they tried to slow down the car using spiked stop sticks, Cooper avoided them. On a second attempt, they tossed out stop sticks and blew out the right two tires, which then slowed the car down to 60 mph. The Fellsmere Police Department released dashcam video that shows an officer throwing out spike strips in their third and final attempt to try to stop the car, which didn’t work. Although it slowed the car to 40 mph, Cooper was still unable to stop and the car was now traveling on 4 rims. Shortly after, the video shows the SUV coming to a complete stop after a PIT maneuver, and smoke surrounds the car.

Somehow, no one was injured and luckily it wasn’t rush hour, and officers say that Cooper made the right choices in the dangerous situation. What would you do if you were in this situation?
